Time in Spanish Nivel 1

Telling time inSpanish  Time is not TOO different in Spanish.  It is formatted the way time used to be told in English.  It sounds a little more polite… maybe a little more “old fashioned” when translated.  But TIME is TIME.

The hours  To say “It is one o’clock” in Spanish we say… Es la una.

Telling time in Spanish  To say “It is two o’clock” in Spanish we say… Son las dos.  Son las (+ number) is the pattern used for all hours from 2:00 through 12:00.

Practice  What would the following times be?  7:00 Son las siete.  11:00 Son las once.  3:00 Son las tres.

Minutes from :01 - :30  To discuss the minutes past the hour from :01-:30 we follow the hour with …y (+number)  2:05 Son las dos y cinco.  2:20 Son las dos y veinte

Practice  3:16 Son las tres y dieciséis. Son las tres y diez y seis.  1:10 Es la una y diez.  8:27 Son las ocho y veintisiete. Son las ocho y veinte y siete.

Minutes from :31 - :59  To discuss the minutes from :31-:59, we must speak in terms of how many minutes REMAIN until the NEXT hour.  For this, we use… The NEXT hour… …menos (+ the number ofminutes that remain)

Examples  2:50 (ten ‘til three) Son las tres menos diez.  2:40 (twenty ‘til three) Son las tres menos veinte.

Practice  5:35 Son las seis menos veinticinco. Son las seis menos veinte y cinco.  7:46 Son las ocho menos catorce.

Practice  1:52 Son las dos menos ocho.  9:38 Son las diez menos veintidós. Son las diez menos veinte y dos.  12:55 Es la una menos cinco.

Extras  It’s Midnight Es la medianoche  It’s Noon/Midday Es el mediodía  Quarter past / Quarter ‘til y cuarto / menos cuarto  Half-past y media

AT a specific time  Often we talk about time in reference to when something will take place, rather than the time it is at this moment.

AT a specific time  To do this we use the word A instead of ES or SON. Tengo la clase de español a las siete y veinte. La clase de español empieza a las siete y veinte y termina a las ocho y nueve.  empieza=begins, termina=ends
