3 La familia real española
Perhaps get students to ‘empty their heads’ onto a post-it in English with all family relationship words they can think of as a way to get them focused on the vocabulary that they will be learning in Spanish in this lesson. La familia real española

You could perhaps re-cap the vowels quickly with them first to make sure they have the 5 sounds clearly embedded in memory (especially the ‘i’ and ‘e’ difference)

6 ¡Haz una lista de parejas!
masculino femenino abuelo abuela This activity involves students actively spotting the link between the masculine feminine words for family – they should be aware of the ‘o’ ending as masculine indicator and ‘a’ as feminine from the Dictionary lesson 1 when you drew their attention to this explicity! Give them a few minutes to list the pairs. esposo prima hijo hermana tío madre nieto hija nieta esposa padre primo hermano tía

7 abuelo padre abuela hijo nieto madre hermano primo hija tío esposo
masculino feminino abuelo padre hijo nieto hermano primo tío esposo abuela madre hija nieta hermana This slide has the answers – obviously students may have them in a different order to the way they appear on this slide! Then ask them to give you an odd one out (‘Pillo al intruso’ is how we call this activity in Spanish – use the TL to explain this activity or at least make sure they understand the Spanish description of it for future occasions) prima tía esposa

8 abuela, madre, hija, nieta, hermana, prima, tía, esposa
¿Cuál es la excepción? abuela, madre, hija, nieta, hermana, prima, tía, esposa ¿Por qué? Explain and model the answer in Spanish! Porque no termina con ‘a’ y porque cambia la letra principal.

10 Felipe Juan Leonor Victoria Pablo Sofía Miguel Irene
You are going to use the next few slides to present & introduce (model) the Spanish words for family, using the Spanish royal family as the example. Make sure they really realise this is the Spanish royal family – make comparison with el principe Charles, la princesa Camilla (!), La reina Elizabeth so that they have a known context to relate this info to. We are NOT expecting that they have heard of the Spanish royal family members – this is new factual knowledge as well as new lexical knowledge so we need to make it absolutely clear from the start! Victoria Pablo Sofía Miguel Irene

11 Juan Carlos (70) Sofía (70) Elena (45) Jaime (45) Cristina (43)
Iñaki (40) Felipe (40) Letizia (37) Felipe (10) Juan (9) Leonor (3) As you describe the relationships keep repeating the key words as you point to the different family members and show visually how they are related to each other. You can re-cap with the class to make sure that they are with you. We can’t expect them to retain all 8 (16) words at this stage but they will hear them a lot and understand them and practise saying them with you. (perhaps 8 minutes whole class work here) Victoria (9) Pablo (8) Sofía (1) Miguel (6) Irene (3)

18 h_rm_n_ hermano p_dr_ padre prima pr_m_ m_dr_ madre esposo _sp_s_
nieta n_ _t_ abuelo _b_ _l_ t_ _ tío This is a slide to use as plenary activity to embed and fix the new language. The words appear with vowels missing – students volunteer the words – there is element of guess work needed as could be mas or fem form for most of them – get students to vote so that all are involved and because it makes for more ‘repetition with a reason’. Next click reveals the answer and then the next clue and so on. After all 9 words are up there, teacher can continue to help embed vocab in a variety of ways – for example, can point to a word and say ‘masculino’ or ‘femenino’ and students have to respond with the correct form – this should be done quickly so that rhythm is maintained and speed of processing language increased. This can then also be done but by calling out English word e.g. Teacher says, ‘daughter – uno, dos, tres’ and then students chorus the correct word. Teacher can also spell out words quickly and students say either the English or pronounce the Spanish word correctly. This can also be done the other way round where students call out the Spanish spelling of one of the words. hija h_j_
