5 Cause and Effect Global challenges have a CAUSE and EFFECT This means that they are caused by numerous things and the effects are different as well. Example: To go to the university Cause: Effect Have good grades, Be smarter and wiser. Do well on the SAT/ACT. Have a good job. Be involved in activities. Have a stable life. Personal essay. More opportunities.

6 Poverty It is a global challenge that has a lot of causes and a large amount of effects. The definition of poverty –depends on time and space –depends on each person. Violates numerous human rights Affects some groups more than others Affects some regions more than others

7 How is the world divided? First world –North America –Western Europe –Japan –Australia Second world –Russia –Eastern Europe –China Third World –Africa –Asia –Latin America Fourth World –Population that is less developed

9 World Poverty More than half of the world ( more than 3 billion people) live on $2.50 a day More than 1 billion people entered the 21st century not knowing how to read or write their names

10 Kids There are 2.2 billion kids in the world 1 billion of kids live in poverty (1 out of every 2 kids in the world) 640 million don’t have where to live 400 million don’t have access to clean water 270 million don’t have access to medical services 10.6 million died in 2003 before turning 5 (approx. 29,000 kids a day)

13 Different Types of Poverty Absolute poverty: –People that do not have access to the basics like food and housing.

14 Different Types of Poverty Relative Poverty: –Every poor person is different depending on where they are (location). –It is not the same to be poor in Africa than it is in the Unites States.

15 Different Types of Poverty Educational Poverty: –People that do not have access to basic and superior education  makes it impossible to have access to adequate jobs.

16 Different Types of Poverty Services Poverty: –People that live in regions that lack public services like drinking water and electricity.
