5 When do we use the imperfect subjunctive? The same rules that govern the use of the present subjunctive govern the use of the imperfect subjunctive. The same rules that govern the use of the present subjunctive govern the use of the imperfect subjunctive. It is the tense of the verb in the main clause that determines whether the present or imperfect subjunctive is used. If the verb in the main clause is in the present or future tense, the present subjunctive is used in the dependent clause. 7 When the verb of the main clause is in the preterite, imperfect, or conditional, the imperfect subjunctive is used. When the verb of the main clause is in the preterite, imperfect, or conditional, the imperfect subjunctive is used. Examples: Examples: –Él habló así para que comprendiéramos. –Quería que ellos me representaran. –Sería absolutamente imposible que yo asistiera.

8 Irregulars If a verb is irregular in the preterite tense, it will maintain that same irregularity in the imperfect subjunctive.
