1 Lucas 9: 28 En aquel tiempo, Jesús se hizo acompañar de Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y subió a un monte para hacer oración. 29 Mientras oraba, su rostro cambió de aspecto y sus vestiduras se hicieron blancas y relampagueantes. 30 De pronto aparecieron conversando con él dos personajes, rodeados de esplendor: eran Moisés y Elías.

2 31 Y hablaban del éxodo que Jesús iba a cumplir en Jerusalén.
32 Pedro y sus compañeros estaban rendidos de sueño; pero, despertándose, vieron la gloria de Jesús y de los que estaban con él. 33 Cuando éstos se retiraban, Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Maestro, sería bueno que nos quedáramos aquí y que hiciéramos tres chozas: una para ti, una para Moisés y otra para Elías”, sin saber lo que decía.

3 34 No había terminado de hablar, cuando se formó una nube que los cubrió; y ellos, al verse envueltos por la nube, se llenaron de miedo. 35 De la nube salió una voz que decía: “Éste es mi Hijo, mi escogido; escúchenlo”. 36 Cuando cesó la voz, se quedó Jesús solo. Los discípulos guardaron silencio y por entonces no dijeron a nadie nada de lo que habían visto.

6 Luke 9: 28 Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. 29 While Jesus was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,

7 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32 Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying.

8 34 While Peter was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” 36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

Reflections on Luke : Reflexiones en Lucas : by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J Feb. 24, 2013 In this Second Sunday of Lent, the Gospel speaks about the Transfiguration of the Lord. This is a very important event in the Life of Christ. Ultimately it showed his divinity manifesting itself in time of prayer. We will study what the early Church Fathers said, and see a few reflections from St. Paul. Then I will suggest a few applications.

12 En este Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma, el Evangelio habla de la Transfiguración del Señor. Este es un acontecimiento muy importante en la Vida de Cristo. Últimamente muestra su divinidad manifestándose en tiempo de oración. Vamos a estudiar lo que los Padres de la Iglesia Primitiva dicen, y luego veremos unas cuantas reflexiones de San Pablo. Why did Jesus take only Peter, James, and John? St. Ambrose (Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 7:9), gives us a spiritual interpretation. He says only three were chosen for a reason. “This perhaps means none can see the glory of the resurrection, except he who has preserved the mystery of the Trinity intact with the undefiled purity of faith. Peter, who received the keys of the kingdom (Matthew 16:19), John, to whom his mother was entrusted (John 19:27), and James, who was the first to mount a bishop’s throne.”

¿Porque se llevo solo a Pedro, Santiago y Juan? San Ambrosio (Exposición del Evangelio de Lucas 7:9), da una interpretación espiritual. Dice que solo tres fueron escogidos por una razón. “Quizás esto significa que nadie puede ver la gloria de la resurrección excepto aquel que ha preservado intacto el misterio de la Trinidad con la pureza de la fe. Pedro, que recibió las llaves del reino (Mateo 16:19), y Juan, a quien se le entrego su Madre (Juan 19:27), y Santiago, que fue el primero a montar el trono del obispado.”

When Jesus prayed he entered into ecstasy. He was in total union with the Father. “His face changed in appearance, and his clothing became dazzlingly white.” Before this event, we know that the Lord often went off alone to pray. He always prayed before important events. At the age of twelve, when a boy became a man in Jewish culture, Jesus was thought to be lost. He was in the temple and said: “Don’t you know that I must be about my Father’s business?”

Estaba en unión total con el Padre. “Su rostro cambio en aspecto, y sus vestiduras se hicieron blancas y relampagueantes.” Antes de este acontecimiento, sabemos que el Señor frecuentemente se iba solo a rezar. Siempre rezaba antes de algo importante. A la edad de doce anos, cuando un muchacho se hace hombre en la cultura Judía, pensaban que Jesús estaba perdido. Él estaba en el Templo y dijo: “¿Que no saben que he de andar en las cosas de mi Padre?”

17 In Luke 19:46 he said, “It is written, my house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” And in Matthew 6:5-6 he said “When you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen. When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father in secret will reward you.” This speaks to us about how we should pray.

We know that Jesus prayed before he chose the twelve apostles. And he prayed before he worked all his miracles. He prayed before he multiplied the loaves and the fish. He prayed at the Agony in the Garden, before entering his Passion. He prayed at the Last Supper. The Last Supper Discourse (John 13 ff) shows how we were taken into his confidence as he shared his thoughts and words as he prepared to go to the Father. He gave us the First Mass and said: “Do this, in memory of me.”

Our own transformation will also occur in prayer. It is in prayer that we should make our most important decisions. It should be in the presence of the Lord. We have the benefit of the Lord’s example, plus we have the teachings of the Apostles in the New Testament, and the example and teachings of so many saints down through the centuries. They all found strength in prayer, and clarity in their discernment, and perseverance unto the end.

Nuestra propia transformación también va a ocurrir en la oración. Es en la oración que debemos hacer nuestras más importantes decisiones. Debe ser en la presencia del Señor. Tenemos el ejemplo del Señor, y además tenemos las enseñanzas de los Apóstoles en el Nuevo Testamento, y el ejemplo de tantos santos por los siglos. Todos ellos encontraron fuerza en la oración, y claridad en su discernimiento, y perseverancia hasta el fin.

23 In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, St. Paul says: “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and that temple you are.” En Primera de Corintios 3:16-17, San Pablo dice: “¿Qué no saben que son el templo de Dios, y que el Espirito Santo de Dios habita en Ustedes? Si cualquiera destruye el templo de Dios, Dios lo destruirá. Porque el templo de Dios es santo, y ese templo eres tu.”

In Second Corinthians 3:18, St. Paul says a Christian is one called in the present to be always and ever increasingly transfigured by the action of the Holy Spirit. “With unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, we are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

25 En la Segunda Carta de Corintios 3:18, San Pablo dice que un Cristiano es uno llamado en el presente a estar siempre más y más transfigurados por la acción del Espirito Santo. “Nosotros todos, mirando a cara descubierta como en un espejo la gloria del Señor, somos transformados de gloria en gloria en la misma imagen, como por el Espíritu del Señor.”

26 Romans 12:2 says: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” This transformation has to come from within.

27 Romanos 12:2 dice: “No se adapten a los criterios de este mundo; al contrario, transfórmense, renueven su interior, para que puedan descubrir cuál es la voluntad de Dios, qué es lo bueno, lo que le agrada, lo perfecto.” Ésta transformación tiene que venir de dentro.

28 The Exodus of the Lord was through his Passion and Death, and so he entered into the glory of the resurrection. So our own exodus from this world of the flesh into the world of the Spirit will likewise have to do with suffering. “If we suffer with Christ we will be glorified with him I consider the sufferings of this present time as not worthy comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:17-18).

29 El Éxodo del Señor fue por su Pasión y Muerte, y así entro a la gloria de la resurrección. 30 With St. Paul we can say: “I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Colossians 1:24). Understanding this will serve as an added incentive the next time we have a difficult moment.

31 Con San Pablo podemos decir: “Ahora me gozo en lo que padezco por ustedes, y cumplo en mi carne lo que falta de las aflicciones de Cristo por su cuerpo, que es la iglesia” (Colosenses 1:24). El entender de esto, nos servirá como un incentivo la siguiente vez que tengamos un momento difícil.

32 In Psalm 127:1-2 the Lord says: “Unless the Lord build the house, the laborer works in vain.” So open your hearts to the Lord, and let him enter. Let him be the Lord of your life. Let every fiber of your being, belong to him. The past is in his mercy. The future is in his divine providence, and he will provide. But abide in Him in the present moment. If you do that, every moment will have meaning. There is a reason for every thing under heaven. Nothing is in vain. Let go, and let God be God!

33 En el Salmo 127:1-2 el Señor dice: “Si Dios no edificare la casa, en vano trabajan los que la edifican.” Entonces, abre tu corazón al Señor, y déjalo que entre. Déjalo que sea el Señor de tu vida. Deja que toda fibra de tu ser pertenezca a Él. El pasado esta en su misericordia. El futuro esta en su divina providencia, y Él proveerá. Pero habita en Él en el momento presente. Si haces eso, todo momento tendrá su sentido. Hay razón para todo bajo el cielo. Nada es en vano. Deja todo, y ¡deja a Dios ser Dios!
