1 Making Connections Prompts Raising A Reader Creando un Lector

2 Objectives:  Parents will learn techniques to connect a book’s story to their child’s life. Objetivos:  Padres aprenderán técnicas para conectar la historia del libro con la vida de su hijo/a.

4 What does it mean to connect the story to the child’s life?  It means to ask questions or provide prompts that encourage the child to think of his/her world (at home, at school, in the neighborhood) and to “connect those memories to the book.”  Significa hacer preguntas o dar oportunidades de animar al niño/a para que piense acerca de su mundo (en la casa, en la escuela, en el vecindario) y “conectar esas memorias con el libro.”

5 Making connections is important because:  Children are experts in their own lives and feel good about answering this kind of question.  It will help children develop higher-level thinking skills. Hacer conexiones es importante porque:  Los niños son expertos en sus propias vidas y se sienten bien contestando este tipo de preguntas.  Le ayudara a los niños a desarrollar habilidades de pensamiento de alto nivel.

6 Higher -level thinking skills look like  One is “text-to-self”, when children get used to making connections between the stories and their life  Another is “text-to-text”, when children make connections between the story and other stories. This is a critical skill for reading comprehension development. Habilidades de Pensamiento de Alto Nivel son  Uno es “texto-a-uno-mismo”, cuando los niños se acostumbran a hacer conexiones entre las historias y su vida  Otro es “texto-a-texto” que es cuando los niños hacen conexiones entre una historia y otras. Esta es una habilidad critica para el desarrollo de comprensión de la lectura.

7  Can you/do you… (eat that much food like the caterpillar?)  If you were… ( ex. a little mouse) what would you do?  This is like the time when…(we went to the farm, to the pool, to the zoo)  We read… (this yesterday in another story)  We saw… (these fruits in the supermarket)  You know…(how to make pancakes)  Certain phrases can help start connection questions  Puedes/debes… (comer tanta comida como la oruga?)  Si tu fueras… ( ej. un pequeño ratón) que harías?  Esto es como aquella vez cuando…(fuimos a la alberca, a la granja, al zoológico)  Leímos… (lo mismo en otro libro ayer)  Vimos… (estas frutas en el supermercado)  Tu sabes…(como hacer pancakes)  Ciertas frases ayudan a crear preguntas de conexión

10 Remember to implement all practices you learned today: Focus on using questions and prompts to encourage children to become active participants in the shared reading experience. Remember you can read the text of the story to ask questions or simply use the illustrations to ask questions, provide prompts and encourage children to participate in the story. When you read your Raising A Reader books at home this week, try using the questions and prompts that we practiced today.” Recuerde implementar todo lo que aprendimos hoy: Use preguntas y anime a los niños a que sean participantes activos en la experiencia de la lectura compartida.
