2 What is an adjective? An adjective describes a noun (person, place, or thing) For example: The serious student El alumno serio Adjective Noun Noun Adjective The cute boy is a serious student Adjective Noun Adjective Noun El chico guapo es un alumno serio Noun Adjective Noun Adjective In English, the adjective goes in front of the noun it is describing. In Spanish, the adjective usually comes after the noun it is describing.

3 Gender In Spanish, most adjectives change form, depending upon whether the noun they are describing is masculine or feminine El hombre alto The tall man El hombre alto no es bajo The tall man is not short La mujer alta The tall woman La mujer alta no es baja The tall woman is not short. 4 Number Adjectives also change form depending upon whether the noun they describe is singular or plural. Carlos es cómico Tina es cómica Él no es serio Ella no es seria singular plural Los amigos son cómicos Los amigos cómicos no son serios Las amigas son cómicas Las amigas cómicas no son serias

5 Forms Many common adjectives end in -o. These adjectives have four forms. Did you notice the adjective “cómico” in the last slide? Let’s look again! Carlos es cómico Los amigos son cómicos Tina es cómica Las amigas son cómicas Singular Plural Masculine cómico cómicos Feminine cómica cómicas

7 Using the correct forms
The correct form of the adjective depends upon the noun it modifies. Is the noun masculine or feminine? Singular or plural? Gabriela es una alumna ambiciosa. Noun Adjective (Feminine singular) (Feminine singular) Zach es un muchacho guapo. Noun Adjective (Masculine singular) (Masculine singular)

9 Review An Adjective Describes a noun
It generally comes after the noun it is describing It has to match the noun in Gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural)
