2 El Pretérito  Preterite means past tense. Generally speaking, the preterite is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed. Use of the preterite tense implies that the past action had a definite beginning and definite end. She walks through the park. She walked through the park.

3 Pretérito de Verbos Regulares  Para conjugar verbos regulares de –ar: -é (yo) - amos (nosotros) -aste (tú) -ó (usted, él, ella) - aron (ustedes, ellos, ellas)

4 Por Ejemplo…  Hablar: Yo hablé Tú hablaste Él/ella/usted habló Nosotros hablamos Ustedes/ellos/ellas hablaron

5 Pretérito de Verbos Regulares  Para conjugar verbos regulares de -er/-ir: -í (yo) - imos (nosotros) -iste (tú) -ió (usted, él, ella) - ieron (ustedes, ellos, ellas)

7 Cambios de i to y  Con verbos de -ir y -er que terminan con una vocal despues de sacar el infinitivo, la i cambia a y en la tercera persona singular y plural.  Por ejemplo… Leer Yo leíNosotros leímos Tú leíste Usted/él/ella leyó ustedes/ellos/ellas leyeron

9 Verbos de -car, -gar, -zar…  Verbos que terminan en -car cambian la c a qu… (buscar- to look for/search)  Verbos que terminan en -gar cambian la g a gu… (jugar- to play, llegar- to arrive)  Verbos que terminan en -zar cambian la z a c… (almorzar- to eat lunch, cruzar- to cross, empezar- to start)  …solamente en la forma de “yo” yo busqué (buscar) yo jugué (jugar) yo almorcé (almorzar)

10 Tener  The root of tener changes from ten- to tuv-, and the same endings we used with poder are used: -e (yo) -imos (nosotros) -iste (tú) -o (usted, él, ella) -ieron (ustedes, ellos, ellas)

14 Dar- to give  An –ar verb that acts like an –er/-ir verb in the preterite: DiDimos DisteX Dio Dieron

15 Verbos con Cambios de Raíz  –ar and –er verbs with stem changes in the present tense do not maintain their stem change in the preterite.  –ir verbs with stem changes in the present tense only change in the 3 rd person singular and 3 rd person plural. There are 2 possible changes: e → i and o → u.
