3 Each province of Spain has it’s unique dance and music. There are the “jotas” of Aragon, Castilla, Navarra, the Sardana of Catalonia, Murcianas of Murcia, etc. The nature of “folk dance” is that it can be executed by “ordinary folk” without formal dance training. There are group dances that are usually accompanied by live music and performed at public celebrations – holidays or sacred feast days. The “jota” is danced with shoes called “espadrilles”. The use of “palillos” is simple with the instument often tied on the center finger to make one simple beat. FOLK DANCES

5 18 th Century Dance ESCUELA BOLERA

6 This style of dance was influence by the French Court. It is for presentation and formal preparation is necessary. The training follows that of classical ballet with a barre, center, and variations. The music is composed for the dance or the dance is commissioned for the music. The shoes are soft and called “zapatillas” and use of “castanuelas” is more complex with the instrument tied to the thumbs allowing the right hand to execute 4 beats and the left one beat. There are soloists and the ensemble is formally choreographed. ESCUELA BOLERA
