Notice that -ir verbs conjugate exactly like -er verbs.

8 The conjugation of regular -ir verbs vivir = to live Viví en Perú por tres años. I lived in Peru for three years. ¿Viviste en Guatemala alguna vez? Did you ever live in Guatemala? Mis abuelos vivieron en Florida toda su vida. My grandparents lived in Florida all their lives.

9 The conjugation of regular -ir verbs Vivimos en Nueva York ahora. We live in New York now. Vivimos en Puerto Rico el año pasado. We lived in Puerto Rico last year. The first-person plural, or nosotros, form of -ir verbs, as with -ar verbs, is the same in the preterit as in the present tense. Again, context usually clarifies the meaning.

14 Dar y Ver DAR and VER use the same endings as regular “– er” and “-ir” verbs. However, the first and third persons have only one syllable and don’t have accents Víctor me dio una película excelente  Victor gave me an excellent movie. Los vi entrar al teatro  I saw them enter the theater.

15 Irregular preterit forms Dar (to give) The -ar verb dar is conjugated in the preterit as if it were a regular -er/-ir verb. di diste dio dimos disteis dieron Again, since the first- and third-persons singular di and dio consist of a single syllable, they need no written accent.

16 Irregular preterit forms Le di un regalito a mi novia. I gave a little gift to my girlfriend. Diste una fiesta de bienvenida para Tito, ¿no? You gave a welcoming party for Tito, didn’t you? dar Teodoro me dio las entradas para el concierto. Teodoro gave me the tickets for the concert. Les dimos limosnas a los pobres. We gave alms to the poor. Los profesores no dieron clases este verano. The professors didn’t give (teach) classes this summer.

17 Irregular preterit forms Ver (to see) The verb ver is a regular -er verb in the preterit but, of course, its first- and third-persons singular have no written accent since they are single-syllable forms. vi viste vio vimos visteis vieron

18 Irregular preterit forms Vi a Ernesto ayer en el almacén. I saw Ernesto yesterday in the department store. ¿Viste la última película de Pedro Almodóvar? Did you see Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film? ver Mi hermano vio al delincuente robar la tienda. My brother saw the criminal rob the store. Vimos las fotos que Juan sacó en Chile. We saw the photos that Juan took in Chile. Los niños vieron a Papá Noel en el centro. The children saw Santa Claus downtown.

19 ¡Atención! The preterit forms for “nosotros” of –ar/-ir verbs are identical to the present tense form. Context will dictate meaning Vivimos aquí ahora (we live here now.) Vivimos allí el año pasado. (we lived there last year.) Always use an accent mark in the final vowel for the 1 st & 3 rd person singular forms of regular verbs—unless the verb is just one syllable Compré aceite de oliva. Ana Luisa añadió una pizca de sal. Vi una receta interesante en ese libro.
