There has been much written and discussed about this. But it’s worth repeating. We are seeing the convergence of four big forces. Those are social, mobile, analytics and cloud. They all have unique value and drive a set of innovations on their own. But they have even more impact when combined and integrated. And it is flowing from working to life outside of work. What we used to call a work and life balance is really a work-life blend. So we are seeing what is happening outside of work influencing what people expect at work. Let’s look more closely at this. As shown here, there is persistent connectivity—mobile, social; its enabled through cloud delivery and informed by big data. In fact, in their 2013 IDC Cloud Maturity Model report, IDC states that “The most important work that a CIO can do over the next several years is to collaborate across the company to envision and develop these next-generation systems that include cloud and other emerging technologies such as big data and analytics, mobile, and social.”1 1IDC Cloud Maturity Model, March 2013

So those four forces are shaping what customers expect—and as companies, governments, agencies, we need to align what we do and what we deliver in a way and in a factor that meets the expectations of our customers or constituents—and also, employees. Virtually instant access to information, products and services. Whether on mobile device (and for employees ones that bring from home and use at work and home) To be engaged as individuals on their own terms—anytime and anywhere. People expect and people demand personalization They want the systems to understand their needs, and to communicate to them with authenticity. Transparency from the companies with whom they interact. Trusted, mutually beneficial relationships that go beyond one-time transactions—the four forces are fueling the expectation people have for on-going authentic relationships—whether it is with products that they have purchased, causes they support or the companies they work for. Seamless experiences that match product and service quality. People expect to be able to move from modalities—social, web, mobile—seamlessly and intelligently.

Technology factors People skills Market factors Macro-economic factors Regulatory concerns Globalization 1 2004 2006 2008 2010 2012 6 3 2 At the same time, businesses are under even greater pressure to deliver on their fundamental imperatives. And new technology is playing a critical role in organizations achieving these objectives. In fact, in IBM’s latest Chief Executive Officer (CEO) study, technology has become the number one external factor impacting organizations. Companies today are looking for partners that not only help them achieve the promise tomorrow, but show them a path to get there. They want a partner with expertise and experience—a proven track record as a technology leader—helping them bridge the past and the future of IT—a partner who can help where necessary and add to their capabilities, their reach, their quality of service and their insights into the market.

But IBM sees three significant challenges in the third-party cloud marketplace today. First, many technology companies position cloud computing as an answer to all IT woes. The client presents a problem in its server environment and the answer is "cloud." IBM disagrees with this assessment. While cloud technologies are playing an ever-more-important role in enterprise IT environments, not all workloads are suitable for cloud migration. Second, too many cloud providers offers "one size fits all" deployment models. Again, IBM disagrees with this approach. Many organizations will need a mix of public, private and hybrid clouds to meet their business needs—along with a host of hardware, software, and services offerings to support those clouds. Third, in survey after survey IT professionals cite loss of control as a barrier to using third-party partners for cloud architecture and management. IBM empathizes with this position. Too many cloud providers put IT professionals in the unenviable position of surrendering control if they wish to take advantage of cloud capabilities and cost benefits.

Employees 685 Data centers 13 Network PoPs 17 Let’s start by introducing SoftLayer, an IBM Company. SoftLayer is one of the largest cloud infrastructure providers in the world, with more than 100,000 devices under management for 21,000 customers in 140 countries. SoftLayer operates a global footprint of 13 data centers and 17 network points-of-presence around the world, filled with servers, storage, routers, firewalls and load balancers. But the heart of this service isn’t servers or network cables. It’s a software platform that provides a complete operating system for the data center – that automates every aspect of infrastructure as a service – and that allows us to deliver the industry’s broadest and highest performing cloud platform. A brief history – SoftLayer was founded in 2005 by a team of technology and business leaders with a wealth of experience providing managed hosting and infrastructure services. Their vision was to build a new kind of on-demand hosting company, driven by software automation and sophisticated management tools – cloud computing before the term was widely used, you might say. By 2013 SoftLayer had become a global company with a management team comprised of seasoned hosting and cloud computing leaders; the market leader in Web hosting and home to more of the world’s top 100,000 sites and apps than any other provider. In July we were acquired by IBM, combining our leadership and innovation in cloud with the technology industry’s global innovation leader. Top 100,000 Sites By Hosting Provider Source: Hostcabi.net

The simple answer is “virtually all of them.” The platform is built for Internet scale, and when we talk about “Internet scale,” we are talking about supporting companies who applications have a few thousand users one day, and a few million users the next day. To accommodate that kind of spike in demand, we knew that every service we provide had to be automated and had to work well together. This means that you can match your infrastructure to your unique business needs. SoftLayer provides a wide range of options for customizing and building out your SoftLayer environment—from storage and network services to software, monitoring, storage, security and much more. 20 Cloud Managed Services (CMS)

Shared cloud services Enterprise+ B A Dedicated cloud Cloud Managed Services ITIL management, support and deployment Security and isolation Availability and performance Technology platform SLA through operating system The IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ offering is an IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)-compliant, fully managed infrastructure as a service solution with committed service-level agreements (SLAs) and with management of instances above the hypervisor level. In fact, one of our key differentiators is that while most cloud offerings stop managing at the hypervisor level and leave the rest of the service management to clients or to ad hoc solutions, IBM has defined a full stack of managed services that span all the way to the application layer, and the architecture is built from the ground up to support production workloads, high availability servers, transactional-ready storage and redundancy. We have designed this Enterprise+ platform around five keys areas: Flexibility in deployment options optimized for our clients’ workloads as well as support and management capabilities Security and isolation: We are targeting enterprise-level applications and capabilities, and as such, the cloud needs to be security rich and integrate with each clients’ unique security requirements Availability and performance for the enterprise built on a more stable, robust and scalable technology platform; the solution uses automation for service activation to provide managed service capabilities with more rapid activation in days versus weeks A cloud infrastructure and architecture designed to support enterprise-level production applications and workloads such as SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Exchange Service-level agreements that extend through the virtual machine and operating system Enterprise+ can bring the cloud to the enterprise with a solution that is meant to be optimized for enterprise workloads. SmartCloud Enterprise+ can be implemented in a variety of deployment models under one common service management platform. IBM hosts the private cloud environment at an IBM data center location, either as a dedicated private cloud or in a shared private cloud environment. Data centers are located around the world. SmartCloud Enterprise+ can provide a fully managed solution with the added security, isolation and flexibility that comes with a dedicated environment. The design for the shared multitenant model follows the same design principles used in the private cloud implementations, but the underlying infrastructure and services are shared by multiple IBM clients. In addition to managing the infrastructure, we can manage the platform above the hypervisor level. This means we can offer services to do patch management, database management and end-to-end monitoring of an application, all integrated into the offering. Our SmartCloud Enterprise+ solution is designed to include all of the hardware, software, tools and managed services elements required to deliver an end-to-end cloud solution. The IBM hardware includes IBM pSeries and xSeries with IBM PowerVM® and VMWare virtualization managers. We will also provide a standard set of operating system images based on your unique infrastructure as a service requirements. All of this is supported by service-level agreements that help ensure high availability and performance. All of the options for instance configuration are loaded into a standard service catalog presented through the SmartCloud Enterprise+ portal. The high-speed Tier 1 storage option includes an IBM XIV® storage area network (SAN)-based solution with options for storage mirroring (local and geographical) and can be a storage solution for transactional systems. IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ offers automated service activation to help you speed provisioning times and reduce the need for error-prone and manual processes. Our self-service portal helps you avoid a complex process for service requests. On this chart, we show how an end user creates a new instance as part of the SmartCloud Enterprise+ service. Using a standardized, web-based portal, the end user requests the creation or destruction of an environment through a graphical user interface. At a high level, the provisioning process involves the creation of an instance based on four key areas. First, the user selects the capacity of the instance to be created from a pre-defined set of virtual machine sizes available in the service catalog. This is basically the type of hardware (either x86 or IBM Power Systems™), the number of virtual central processing units (CPUs), and the amount of memory along with the required storage to be configured. Next a client selects the service-level agreement that would be associated with the instance. The third step in the request process is the operating system software image to be built on the instance. Finally, the user would then select any optional managed services to be built on top of the instance such as application monitoring or patch management. 25 25 25
