1 Lucas 3:15-16, 21-22 15 En aquel tiempo, como el pueblo estaba en expectación y todos pensaban que quizá Juan el Bautista era el Mesías, 16 Juan los sacó de dudas, diciéndoles: “Es cierto que yo bautizo con agua, pero ya viene otro más poderoso que yo, a quien no merezco desatarle las correas de sus sandalias. Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego”.

2 21 Sucedió que entre la gente que se bautizaba, también Jesús fue bautizado. Mientras éste oraba, se abrió el cielo 22 y el Espíritu Santo bajó sobre él en forma sensible, como de una paloma, y del cielo llegó una voz que decía: “Tú eres mi Hijo, el predilecto; en ti me complazco”.

And they are a challenge for us even to this day, because they are not limited in time. They can be applied all the time and in every place. We need to reflect upon what happened in those days, and see how we can apply them today.

13 Next follows the preparation that was needed for that which was to follow. “Prepare the way of the Lord! Every valley shall be filled!” (John the Baptist was to cite this lines). If you have been to the Holy Land, like I have, you will appreciate these words better upon remembering the terrain. It is full of valleys and hills, and very bad roads that twist and turn everywhere. It is difficult terrain. It is a desert and stones are found everywhere. The roads go here and there. There are no straight roads.

This reality helps us make applications in the spiritual sense. God fulfilled the prophecies made by Isaiah, with the coming of Christ Jesus our Savior. The reign of God has come. But whenever we sin, we walk along evil paths. We are surrounded by the world that rejects God. That is why it is necessary to have a spirituality that includes frequenting the sacraments that Jesus instituted to help us be victorious today.

There are still those who walk in darkness and in the shadow of death. They need to hear what St. Paul says in the second reading, the Letter to Titus 2:11-14, 3:4-7. He says: “The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, our hope.”

19 What is needed is someone who has the conviction to proclaim the message of salvation. St. Paul in (Romans 10:14) says: “How are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?” They need help in order to practice the faith.

They need someone to proclaim the message of salvation. “Shout in a loud voice!” That is precisely what John the Baptist did. In his humility he prophesied that one was to come after him who was greater than he. And he would baptize with the Holy Sprit and with fire.

He came in the form of a dove, and God said: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Holy Father Benedict XVI in his book “Jesus of Nazareth” has much to say about this. He says that when Luke refers to the Holy Spirit like a dove, it reminds us of Genesis 1:2 where it says that the Spirit hovered over the waters “like a dove.” This suggests that it is a simile for something that ultimately cannot be described.

25 The same heavenly voice is heard once more in the Transfiguration of Jesus, where “Listen to him” is added. To be noted is that the heavens opened over Jesus. His communion with the will of the Father fulfilled all righteousness. Heaven is the place where the will of God is fulfilled perfectly. God then proclaims who Jesus is, not what he does. He is the beloved son upon with whom the Father is pleased. Also to be noted is that here the Blessed Trinity begins to be manifested.

He was no longer afraid. Today the Holy Spirit comes in Baptism, and whenever we live that Baptism, as we pray. Let us pray for courage. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for the courage to proclaim: “Here is your God ! ”
