2 Irregular Preterite Verbs (p.173) English Grammar Connection: To form the past tense of irregular verbs in English, you dont add the regular –ed ending. Instead, you change the form of the verb. She is becomes she was Ella está becomes ella estuvo

3 Some verbs have an irregular stem when you conjugate them to the preterite tense. Compare : La clase está en el gimnasio. La clase estuvo en el gimnasio ayer. Yo me pongo la ropa en la mañana. Yo me puse la ropa en la mañana anteayer. Tú tienes un examen hoy. Tú tuviste un examen ayer.

4 Think PPEST! Here are the irregular stems in the preterite: Pus(poner) Pud(poder) Estuv(estar) Sup(saber) Tuv(tener) The verb saber usually has a different meaning in the preterite. I means to find out. Yo supe ayer que no hay examen hoy. (I found out yesterday that there is no exam today.) Attach the corresponding irregular preterite endings: -e-imos -iste-isteis -o-ieron
