What about por? Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.R.O.D.D.S. does not apply. However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: D.E.E.M.M.M.S This acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.

D.E.E.M.M.M.S. Use por when talking about: Duration Emotions Exchange Motivation Means Movement Substitution

Motivation It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between motivation (expressed with por) and purpose (expressed with para). Motivation is the equivalent to the English expression due to. If you can replace the Spanish preposition with due to or because of then use por. Motivation is the cause behind it rather than the goal in front of it. Tengo muchas botellas de champú por el viaje. Vs Tengo muchas botellas de champú para el viaje.

Motivation (cont) There are a few verbs that are consistently followed by the preposition POR to indicate motivations. Raúl regresó por la comida de Luisa.

Substitution Substitution is usually expressed in English with in place of, for the sake of or instead of. If these expressions sound appropriate then use POR. Marta canta por Yolanda. Yolanda no puede cantar porque está enferma. Isabel compra el regalo por su madre porque su madre no tiene tiempo para ir de compras.
