The word formal is used to refer to older people; people you don’t know or authority figures. “usted” (you) in Spanish is formal Como esta usted? How are you? The word familiar is used to refer to someone you know, a friend or a relative. “tu” (you) in Spanish is familiar Como estas tu? How are you?
