2 Present Progessive Irregulars
If the stem of an –er/-ir verb ends in a vowel, change –iendo to –yendo. Ex) leer___________ construir___________ Irregulars: creer, ir, destruir, incluir, oír, traer, caer leyendo construyendo

3 IRREGULARITIES Verbs which are STEM-CHANGING follow two rules:
-AR and –ER verbs do NOT have a stem-change in the present participle jugar »» jugando perder »» perdiendo

4 IRREGULARITIES -ir verbs, however, DO have a stem-change.
E --> I also do so in the participle: decir »» diciendo pedir »» pidiendo servir »» está sirviendo O-->UE change to O-->U dormir »» durmiendo morir »» muriendo poder  pudiendo E-->IE change E-->I: divertirse »» se está divirtiendo sentir »» sintiendo Others: vestir, venir, repetir, seguir, sugerir, sentir, etc

8 NOTA: English-present progressive refers to future events
Spanish-present progressive used strictly to talk about actions that are occurring at a particular point in time. NOT THE FUTURE! To refer to actions about to occur either use the present tense, or (ir + a + infinitive). When are you leaving? I am leaving at 3:00 this afternoon. ¿Cuándo sales tú? Estoy saliendo a las tres de la tarde. Salgo a las tres de la tarde. Voy a salir a las 3 de la tarde.

9 NOTA: Spanish uses other verbs to express “shades” of progressive action: Seguir & Continuar-keep doing something Mi hija sigue sacando buenas notas. Ir- more & more Venir- & llevar- gradual action that increases over time Andar-always doing something Present progressive is rarely used with verbs that indicate coming and going (ir/venir). Use present tense.
