6 Imperfect Progressive and Preterite
Review: Present Progressive Tense Things happening right now - use a form of “estar” and the present participle (-ar verbs end in -ando, -er/-ir verbs end in -iendo -- there are some irregulars) Yo estoy hablando. Ustedes están leyendo.

7 Imperfect Progressive
Used to describe something that was taking place over a period of time in the past To form: imperfect tense of estar + the present participle Yo estaba esquiando cuando me caí y me torcí el tobillo. imperfect tense of estar present participle of esquiar

8 The present and imperfect progressive tenses use the same present participles. Some irregulars:
o => u decir: diciendo pedir: pidiendo repetir: repitiendo seguir: siguiendo servir: sirviendo vestir: vistiendo dormir: durmiendo

9 When using pronouns [me, te, le, lo, la, se, nos, les, los, las] with the imperfect progressive -- either put them before estar or attach them to the participle. Me estaba afeitando cuando me corté. Estaba afeitandome cuando me corté. i => y creer: creyendo leer: leyendo traer: trayendo

10 Note: imperfect progressive => describes what was taking place (background action) preterite => specific occurrence in the past or an interrupting action Ella estaba corriendo cuando se lastimó.
