Fui has two meanings: because the verbs ir (to go) and ser (to be) are conjugated in exactly the same way in the preterite. I went = fui (ir) I was = fui (ser)

These verbs use a special stem in the preterite (dij-, estuv-, hic-, pus-). Despite their irregular stems, the endings of these verbs all follow the same pattern.
