1 Sources of Renewable Energy
Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

2 How can we classify energy sources?
Energy sources are either: 1) Renewable 2) Non Renewable The difference is very important! Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

3 What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy that cannot be exhausted. Renewable energy sources are: Biomass — including wood and wood waste, landfill gas, and biogas, ethanol, and biodiesel Water (hydropower) Geothermal Wind Solar Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

Biomass is organic material used to produce energy. An example: Olive seeds can be used to produce energy for heating. They are burnt and produce heat energy or steam energy. Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

Hydropower is power that is generated by moving water. This is an example of how a hydroelectric generator works. Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

Geothermal Geothermal energy is thermal energy stored and generated in the Earth. Geothermal energy can be caused by volcanos, absorbed sunlight and decaying minerals. The most common method of using geothermal power is the use of flash steam plants. Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria Flash steam plants pull deep, high-pressure hot water into lower-pressure tanks and use the resulting flashed steam to drive turbines. They require fluid temperatures of at least 180°C, usually more. This is the most common type of plant in operation today

Wind Energy Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy. Examples include: wind turbines to make electricity wind mills for mechanical power wind pumps for pumping water sails to propel ships Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

Solar Energy Solar Energy is the heat and light energy obtained from the sun. Solar powered electricity is the most popular form of converting the sun´s light energy. Solar powered electricity can be used to heat water, power lights, etc. Sección bilingüe CEIP Colón Córdoba 6º Primaria

16 Problems and Challenges
It is still cheaper to burn fuels to make electricity. Therefore, it is harder to get companies to invest in renewable energy, and, people don`t want to pay more for electricity. At the moment, the technology does not exist to allow renewable energy to be our only energy source. Wind and Solar energy are dependant on nature. So if there is no sun and no wind on one day, we can´t make power. However, the important thing to remember is that if we don´t do more soon, the planet will be in trouble!
