3  El estudiante (masculine) = The student  La estudiante (feminine) = The student  El profesor (masculine) = The teacher  La profesora (feminine) = The teacher

4  Nouns have a gender; they are either masculine or feminine.  Most nouns that end with –o are masculine, most nouns that end with –a are feminine.  El = Masculine; La = Feminine  El and La both mean “the”  Nouns that end in –e or a consonant must be learned as masculine or feminine.  In other words, you will be taught which –e words and words that end with a consonant are masculine or feminine.
