B. ¿Quién era Elías? ¿Cuándo vivió? ¿Qué hizo? ¿Por qué se menciona tanto en el N. T.? B. Who was Elijah? When did he live? What did he do? Why is he mentioned so much in the N. T.?

I. Era un valiente profeta de Dios que vivió durante el tiempo del reino dividido, 1 Reyes 17 – 2 Reyes 2. I. He was a valiant prophet of God who lived during the time of the divided kingdom, 1 Kings 17 – 2 Kings 2.

A. Para orientarnos recordemos algunos de los eventos sobresalientes de la historia bíblica: A. To orient ourselves lets remember some of the outstanding events of Bible history:

Diluvio (Flood) – Gén. 6-9. Por el pecado.
Promesas a Abraham (Promises to Abraham) Gén 12:1-3, una nación especial, tierra, Cristo (special nation, land, Christ)… Isaac… Jacob (Israel). 12 hijos de Israel (12 sons of Israel) Gén Esclavitud en Egipto (Egyptian slavery) Éxodo. 40 años en desierto (40 years in desert) Números Conquista de Canaán (Conquest of Canaan) Josué Jueces, libertadores (Judges, liberators). Reino unido (United kingdom) 1, 2 Samuel Reino dividido (Divided kingdom) 1, 2 Reyes (Kings) – durante este tiempo de apostasía Elías vivió (during this time of apostasy Elijah lived).

B. Elías denunciaba la idolatría del Rey Acab (rey de Israel). El pecado de este rey se describe en 1 Reyes 16: Dominado por su esposa, Jezabel, una pagana. B. Elijah denounced the idolatry of king Ahab (king of Israel). The sin of this king is described in 1 Kings 16: Dominated by his wife, Jezabel, a pagan.

II. Elías predice la sequía como castigo sobre el rey y el pueblo, 1 Reyes 17:1. Tuvo que huir, Dios lo cuidaba, v. 2-6. II. Elijah predicts the drought as a punishment of the king and the people, 1 Kings 17:1. He had to flee, God cared for him, v. 2-6.

A. Deut. 8:7, era tierra de arroyos, de aguas, de fuentes y de manantiales que brotan en vegas y montes … 11:11. A. Deut. 8:7, it was a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills … 11:11.

B. Pero tenían que ser fieles a Dios para disfrutar estas bendiciones. Deut. 11: Y ya no eran fieles. B. But they had to be faithful to God to enjoy these blessings. Deut. 11: And now they were not faithful.

C. Sant. 5:17, “Elías oró fervientemente para que no lloviera, y no llovió sobre la tierra por tres años y seis meses.” C. James 5:17, “Elijah prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.”

III. Elías y Acab, 1 Reyes 18:1, Dios dice a Elías: “Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y yo haré llover…” III. Elijah and Ahab, 1 Kings 18:1, God tells Elijah, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will make it rain…”

A. Abdías, mayordomo del rey, se encontró con Elías quien dijo, “di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías”, 1 Reyes 18:7, 8. A. Obadiah, overseer of the house of the king, met Elijah who said, “go to your master and say: Elijah is here.”

B. Acab dijo: “¿Eres tú el que turba a Israel?” “Yo no… sino tú… dejando los mandamientos de Jehová”. V. 17, 18; 1 Reyes 21:25, 26. B. Ahab said: “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?” “I have not troubled Israel but you have… you have forsaken the command-ments of the Lord.” V. 17, 18; 1 Kings 21:25, 26.

C. Así son los que dejan la Palabra de Dios. No reconocen que ELLOS son la causa de grandes problemas religiosos. C. This is the way of those who leave the Word of God. They do not recognize that THEY are the cause of serious religious problems.

D. Elías insiste en que el pueblo se decida. ¿Seguirán a Jehová o a los ídolos? 1 Reyes 18:21. D. Elijah insists that the people decide. Will they follow the Lord or the idols? 1 Kings 18:21.

IV. El encuentro en el monte Carmelo entre Elías y los 450 profetas de Baal, 1 Reyes 18:23-40. IV. The encounter on Mount Carmel between Elijah and the 450 prophets of Baal, 1 Kings 18:23-40.

A. Cortar buey en pedazos, ponerlo sobre leña pero no poner fuego debajo… invocar sus dioses para que envíen fuego. C. Cut ox in pieces, put it on wood but do not put fire underneath… invoke your gods to send fire.

B. Baal no responde, v. 26, y Elías se burlaba de ellos, v. 27. Se sajaban con espadas y lanzas hasta que la sangre chorreaba sobre ellos, v. 28. B. Baal does not respond, v. 26, and Elijah mocks them, v. 27. They “cut themselves with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.” V. 28.

C. Entonces Elías edificó altar, puso leña, cortó el buey en pedazos y lo puso sobre la leña. Hizo sanja y la llenó con agua. Mojó todo con agua tres veces. C. Then Elijah built an altar, put wood on it, cut the ox in pieces and put it on the wood. He made a trench and filled it with water. He soaked everything with water three times.

D. Entonces oró a Dios, 1 Reyes 18: Fuego de Dios consumió el holocausto, aun lamió el agua de la zanja. D. Then he prayed to God, 1 Kings 18: Fire from God consumed the holocaust, even licked up the water in the trench.

E. El pueblo se postraron y dijeron, “¡Jehová es Dios! ¡Jehová es Dios!”, 1 Reyes 18:39. E. The people fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God.” 1 Kings 18:39.

F. Elías mató a los 450 falsos profetas de Baal, oró otra vez a Dios (Sant. 5:18) y “hubo una gran lluvia”, v. 45. F. Elijah killed the 450 false prophets of Baal, prayed again to God (James 5:18) and “there was a great rain,” v. 45.

V. Elías desanimado, 1 Reyes 19:9, 10, perseguido por Jezabel, esposa de Acab, se sentía muy solo, pero Dios tenía cuyas rodillas no se doblaron ante Baal”, v . 18. V. Elijah discouraged, 1 Kings 19:9, 10, pursued by Jezabel, wife of Ahab, he felt very alone, but God had 7,000 whose knees had not bowed to Baal, v. 18.

Elijah did not die. 2 Kings 2:11, “a chariot of fire and horses of fire… separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.” (Enoch didn’t die, Gen. 5:24).

VI. El segundo Elías. A. Prometido. Mal. 4:5, 6, “yo os envío al profeta Elías antes que venga el día del SEÑOR”. VI. The second Elijah. A. Promised. Mal. 4:5, 6, “I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the… day of the LORD.”

B. Esperado. Mat.16:13, ¿Quién dicen los hombres que es el Hijo del Hombre? Dijeron:… Elías…” B. Expected. Matt. 16:13, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is? They said: … Elijah…”

C. Vino. Era Juan. Mat. 11:13, 14, “todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan… y él es Elías, el que había de venir”. C. Came. It was John. Matt. 11:13, 14, “For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John… and he himself is Elijah who was to come.”

Mat. 17:12, 13, “yo os digo que Elías ya vino, y no le reconocieron; más bien, hicieron con Él todo lo que quisieron… entendieron que les hablaba de Juan el Bautista”. Matt. 17:12, 13, “I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished… they understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.”

D. ¿Por qué dijo Juan que él no era Elías? Juan 1: No era (literalmente), pero vino con el espíritu y poder de Elías, Luc 1:17. D. Why did John say that he was not Elijah? John 1: He was not (literally), but he came in the spirit and power of Elijah, Lk. 1:17.

E. Otras semejanzas: Manera de vestirse… Lucharon contra la apostasía… reprendie-ron reyes y odiados por esposas de éstos. E. Other likenesses: Manner of dress… Struggled against apostasy… reproved kings and hated by wives of these kings.

F. Salieron del mundo de dos maneras distintas, pero con rumbo al mismo destino: 2 Reyes 2:11; Mat. 14:10, 11. F. Left the world in two different ways but on the way to the same destiny: 2 Kings 2:11; Matt. 14:10, 11.

Conclusión: A. Los dos honrados por esta comparación. Luc. 1:17 “espíritu y poder de Elías”; Mat. 11:11, “no se ha levantado entre los nacidos de mujer ningún otro mayor que Juan el Bautista”. Conclusion: A. Both men honored by this comparison. Lk. 1:17, “spirit and power of Elijah”; Matt. 11:11, “among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist.”

B. Los dos son ejemplos tremendos para nosotros, y mayormente para los que predican la Palabra. Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:11. B. Both are tremendous examples for us, especially for those who preach the Word. Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:11.

C. Luc. 9:28-31, en el monte de transfigura-ción “Moisés y Elías… aparecieron en gloria y hablaban de su partida, que Él iba a cumplir en Jerusalén”. ¡Honor grande! C. Lk. 9:28-31, on the mount of transfigura-tion Moses and Elijah, “appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.” Great honor!
