9 Ser y Estar con Participios  Ser y Estar se usan con participios para describir una ACCION (ser) o una CONDICION/RESULTADO (estar).

10 ESTAR + Participle To describe the state of things or how things seem at the moment.

11 SER + Participle  Used for passive voice. To express an ACTION that is done BY an agent.

13 English Connection ESTAR (condition)  The drawer is open.  The copier is broken.  For a long time the computers were dirty. SER (action)  The drawer was opened by the boss.  The copier was broken by the intern.  Yesterday the computers were cleaned by the cleaning staff.

14 ESTAR  El cajón está abierto.  La fotocopiadora está rota  Las computadoras estuvieron sucias por mucho tiempo. SER  El cajón fue abierto por la jefa.  La fotocopiadora fue rota por el becario.  Ayer las computadoras fueron limpiadas por el personal de limipieza.

15 Agreement of participles  Notice that the the participle ‘pintado’ changed to ‘pintadas ’ to agree with ‘las paredes’. Normally, when used with haber, participles always end in ‘O’. This is not the case when used with SER/ESTAR.

16 SER: La puerta es abierta por el animal.

17 ESTAR: La puerta está abierta.

18 SER: Los platos son lavados por mi abuela.

19 ESTAR: Los platos están lavados.

20 SER: La cena es servida por el mesero.

21 ESTAR: La cena está servida.

22 SER: El coche fue lavado por la pareja.

23 ESTAR: El coche está lavado.
