3 Tener que … Use tener + que + an infinitive to say that you have to do something. Por ejemplo… 1.I have to study for the Spanish quiz. Tengo que estudiar para la prueba. 2. She has to go to the bakery today. Ella tiene que ir a la panadería hoy. 3. We have to wear a dress to the wedding. Tenemos que llevar un vestido a la boda.

4 Tener ganas de… Use “tener ganas de” + an infinitive to talk about what you feel like doing. Tener + ganas + de + an infinitive. 1.I feel like eating something. Tengo ganas de comer algo. 2. Do you feel like going to the movies? ¿Tienes ganas de ir al cine?

5 Tener Idioms The verb TENER is used in many expressions in which the verb TENER does not directly translate as. These expressions are referred to as TENER IDIOMS. While you may say in English that you are hungry or a person is thirsty, in Spanish we say the equivalent of you have hunger or someone has thirst. Ella tiene sed. = She is thirsty. (She has thirst.) Yo tengo prisa. = I’m in a hurry. (I have hurry.)
