2 INDICATIVE VS. SUBJUNCTIVE CERTAINTY Creo que estás cansada. El médico piensa que tengo gripa. Es verdad que Alicia está palida. Es verdad que hace buen tiempo ahora. The indicative is used after verbs and expressions of certainty. DOUBT Dudo que estés enferma. Niega que tenga mononucleosis. Es probable que esté enferma. Es possible que haga mal tiempo mañana. The subjunctive is used after verbs and expressions of doubt and uncertainty.

3 CERTAINTY VS. UNCERTAINTY Many verbs and expressions are used to convey belief, knowledge, or convictions of certain facts, and are followed by the indicative. When these verbs and expressions are used in the negative, they convey an element of doubt or uncertainty. When used in the negative, these verbs and expressions are followed by the subjunctive.

4 CERTAINTY VS. UNCERTAINTY CERTAINTY (Indicative) Creo que estás cansado. Estoy seguro de que dices la verdad. Es cierto que tenemos una prueba pronto. UNCERTAINTY (Subjunctivo) No creo que estés cansado. No estoy seguro de que digas la verdad. No es cierto que tengamos una prueba pronto.

5 UNCERTAINTY VS. CERTAINTY When used in the affirmative, verbs like dudar and negar convey doubt, and are followed by the subjunctive. When used in the negative, verbs like dudar and negar convey certainty, and followed by the indicative.

6 UNCERTAINTY VS. CERTAINTY UNCERTAINTY (Subjunctive) Dudo que sea simpático. Niega que tenga mononucleosis. CERTAINTY (Indicative) No dudo que es simpatico. No niega que tengo mononucleosis.

7 INTERROGATIVE When used in the interrogative, the verbs and expressions may or may not imply doubt. Depending upon the context, they may be followed by the subjunctive or the indicative. ¿Crees que el Sr. Arias es muy rico? (Yo lo creo.) ¿Crees que el enfermero sea competente? (Yo no sé.)
