3 * I n English think about an event that happened yesterday. * N ow, think about what you were doing an hour ago. * L astly, think about something you did when you were a child that you don’t do anymore: something you used to eat, an activity or sport you used to practice, somewhere you lived… etc.

4 * T hese are my examples: 1. I worked late yesterday. 2. I was teaching a class an hour ago. 3. I used to practice swimming. * W hat are the tenses used in each one of my examples? 1. Simple Past. 2. –ING in past or Past Progressive. 3. used to + infinitive verb, to talk about an activity that lasted sometime in the past but doesn’t occur anymore. worked was teaching used to practice

5 *E*E nglish Grammar Connection: * T o express ideas such as I used to study or I was studying, we use the Imperfect tense in Spanish.

6 * H ow to use it: * T he imperfect is used to describe something was not perfected or not completed in the past. You use it to: 1. talk about something that was happening. 2. talk about something you used to do or past routines. 3. say how old someone was. 4. tell what time it was.

7 * Regular –AR, -ER and –IR verbs take the following endings: -AR estar estaba estabas estaba estábamos estabais estaban -ER comer comía comías comía comíamos comíais comían -IR vivir vivía vivías vivía vivíamos vivíais vivían yo tú usted, él, ella nosotros (as) vosotros (as) ustedes, ellos (as)

8 * There are only three irregular verbs in the imperfect: SER, IR and VER. SER era eras era éramos erais eran IR iba ibas iba íbamos ibais iban VER veía veías veía veíamos veíais veían yo tú usted, él, ella nosotros (as) vosotros (as) ustedes, ellos (as)

9 * If you want to translate the verb USED TO from English: SOLER (to used to) solía solías solía solíamos solíais solían yo tú usted, él, ella nosotros (as) vosotros (as) ustedes, ellos (as) + infinitive verb. Yo solía vivir en Columbia, SC. Yo vivía en Columbia, SC.

10 * E xamples: 1. Yo escuchaba las noticias cuando venía a la escuela. 2. ¿Qué hacías cuando eras pequeño (a)? 3. Yo veía mucha television. 4. ¿Peleabas mucho cuando eras pequeño? Did you use to fight a lot when you were little? I was listening to the news when I was coming here. What did you use to do when you were little? I used to watch a lot of TV.

11 * E xamples: 1. ¿Cuántos años tenían tus padres cuando se casaron? 2. Mi madre tenía dieciocho años y mi padre tenía veintitres años cuando se casaron. 3. Eran las seis de la mañana cuando comía mi cereal. How old were your parents when they got married? My mom was eighteen years old and my father was twenty three years old when they got married. It was six in the morning when I was eating my cereal. Usually the word CUANDO (when) is used to connect two events.
