16
Negative Words no nada nadie ningún ninguno ninguna ni…ni nunca tampoco No Nothing No one Not any ___ (masc) None (masc) None, not any (fem) Neither… nor Never Neither, either
17
Big Idea In English we try to avoid double negatives. For example, it would be incorrect in English to say Wrong: I don’t know nothing. Right: I don’t know anything.
18
Big Idea In Spanish, as a general rule, a sentence shouldn’t have both a negative and an affirmative word. So if one part is negative, it should all be negative. Wrong: Yo no sé algo. Right: No, yo no sé nada.
19
Práctica Sí, alguien hizo algo para mí anoche. No, nadie hizo nada para mí, ni para mi familia. Yo quiero comprar o una pulsera o un reloj. Ella no quiere llevar ni un vestido ni una falda. I always want some cakes from the pastry shop. I never want anything from the ice cream shop.
20
Práctica Yes, someone did something for me last night. No, no one did anything for me, nor for my family. I want to buy either a bracelet or a watch. She doesn’t want to wear a dress nor a skirt. Yo siempre quiero unos pasteles de la pastelería. Yo nunca quiero nada de la heladería.

THE BIG QUESTION: What do we do if we have BOTH a DOP and an IOP?
31
Two Answers We put the IOP first, and then the DOP. If both the IOP and the DOP start with the letter L, then we change the IOP to SE. Why? Because we don’t like Layla! So we don’t want to see le la, le las, le lo, etc.
32
Ejemplos Mi mamá leyó el libro a mí. Mi mamá me lo leyó. My mom read me it. Yo tiré la pelota a Joe Mauer. Yo se la tiré. I threw him it.
33

35
Excepciones We said before that IOPs and DOPs go before a conjugated verb. There are three kinds of verbs that carry IOPs and DOPs attached to the end: Infinitives Affirmative commands Progressive verbs
36
Infinitives If there’s just one pronoun, you won’t need to add an accent. If there are two, you will need to add an accent on the verb’s original emphasis. Yo no quiero leer el libro. Yo no quiero leer lo. Tú necesitas hacer la tarea. Tú necesitas hacer la. Yo voy a explicar la situación a ti. Yo voy a explicár tela. A ella le gusta decir la verdad a nosotros. A ella le gusta decír nosla.
37
Affirmative Commands You will need to add an accent on the verb’s original emphasis whether there’s one accent or two. Pasen la tarea a mí. Pásenme la tarea. Lean este libro a los estudiantes. Léanselos. Da los regalos a nosotros. Dánoslos. Di tu nombre a mí. Dímelo.
38
Progressive Verbs You will need to add an accent on the verb’s original emphasis whether there’s one accent or two. Yo estoy hablando a ella. Yo estoy hablándole. Ella está llorando a mí. Ella está llorándome. Nosotros estamos considerando la opción. Nosotros estamos considerándola. ¿Quién está diciendo la mentira a nosotros? ¿ Quién está diciéndonosla?
