2 Objetivo: What is a direct object? What are they used for? How are they used in a sentence?

3 En inglés… Identify the parts of the English sentence: subject, verb, direct object Subject- The person/thing doing the action Verb- the action Direct object- the thing receiving the action I want that skirt. Juan bought some shoes.

4 En español… Identify the parts in Spanish: subject, verb, direct object Yo quiero pizza. Manuel construye una casa. Luis mira la television. ¿Hace la tarea Maria?

5 Te toca a ti (your turn) Identify the subjects, verbs, and direct objects. Los estudiantes hacen la tarea. Mis padres compran un carro. Ustedes comprenden el libro. ¿Tienes tú el dinero? Nosotros comemos la comida china. Vosotros no os gustan las películas románticas.

6 Direct Object Pronouns Direct object pronouns REPLACE the direct objects in a sentence. For example: Rolando wants the shoes. Subject: Rolando Verb: wants Direct Object: the shoes What can we replace “the shoes ” with to simplify the sentence? Them ! Rolando wants them.

7 Direct Object Pronouns We see the animals. We see them. He makes the bed. He makes it. Mom prepares the food. Mom prepares it. She answers the telephone. She answers it.

8 Direct Object Pronouns Lets try it in Spanish: Roberto quiere los zapatos. Roberto los quiere. I took out “los zapatos” and replaced both words with the direct object pronoun “los”. Notice, I put “los” IN FRONT OF the conjugated verb.

9 Direct Object Pronouns What are the pronouns we use to replace the nouns in Spanish? me (me)nos (us) te(you)os (you all) lo/la (it, him, her)los/las (them)

10 Lets try it! me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los/las Usted compra el libro. What is the direct object? el libro What should we replace it with? lo Where to we put it? in front of “compra” Usted lo compra.

11 Lets try it! me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los/las Ella hace los quehaceres. Ella los hace. Vosotros tenéis las mochilas. Vosotros las tenéis. Tú tomas los refrescos. Tú los tomas. Yo como la comida italiana. Yo la como. Ella juega el tenís. Ella lo juega. Nosotros decimos el secreto. Nosotros lo decimos ¿Traes la música? ¿La traes?

12 Práctica- Practice Mis amigos leen los libros. Mis amigos los leen. Mi tía compra la ropa. Mi tía la compra. Usted come las frutas. Usted las come. Pedro ve los monumentos. Pedro los ve. Ustedes comprenden el ejercicio. *Ustedes lo comprenden. Ella conoce a Erika. *Ella la conoce. Nosotros miramos las telenovelas. *Nosotros las miramos.

13 Direct Object Pronouns with 2 verbs: In a sentence with 1 verb, put the DOP in front of the conjugated verb. Ella la compra. In a sentence with 2 verbs, you can put the DOP in front of the conjugated verb OR attach it to the infinitive. Ella la quiere comprar. Ella quiere comprarla.

15 Direct Object Pronouns with 2 verbs Usted puede leer los libros. Usted los puede leer./Usted puede leerlos. Ella no quiere hacer la tarea. Ella no la quiere hacer/Ella no quiere hacerla. Tú no quieres dar la tarea a la profesora. Tú no la quieres dar a la profesora./Tú no quieres darla a la profesora. Vosotros no podéis comprender la tarea. Vosotros no la podéis comprender./Vosotros no podéis comprenderla.
