You respond: Estoy… muy bien bien bastante bien mal muy mal triste así-así enojado/a cansado/a feliz enfermo/a regular You ask/You hear: ¿Cómo estás (tú)? ¿Cómo está (Usted/Ud.)? ¿Qué pasa? ¿Qué tal? ¿y tú? ¿y Usted? ¿Qué pasa? & ¿Qué tal? Really mean “what’s up” or “what’s happening”—usually reply with “nada”….

7 Tú vs. Usted Tú vs. Usted are both subject pronouns (even more on this topic later) Both mean “you” Usted is usually abbreviated Ud. Used in different circumstances: tú = is used to speak informally with friends, family, young children, and pets Usted = is used to speak formally to adults, teachers, strangers, and other people you do not know or to people to whom you want to show respect

8 Por ejemplo…. ¿Cómo estás (tú)? How are you? ~ informal ¿Cómo está (Usted)? How are you? ~ formal Por ejemplo… You would use the “Usted” form of address if you were talking to a policeman… If the policeman was talking to a little girl, he would use the “tú” form of address.
