1 CAN / CAN’T

2 Can Can is an auxiliary verb, a modal auxiliary verb. We use can to: (can es un verbo auxiliar, un verbo auxiliar modal, el uso de can es para:) talk about possibility and ability (Hablar sobre posibilidad y abilidad) make requests (Hacer peticiones) ask for or give permission (pedir o dar permiso)

3 Structure of Can subject + can + main verb (sujeto + can+verbo principal +) The main verb is always the bare infinitive (infinitive without "to"). El verbo principal es siempre el infinitivo (infinitivo sin «to»)

4 can: Possibility and Ability
Use of Can can: Possibility and Ability We use can to talk about what is possible, what we are able or free to do: Utilizamos can para hablar de lo que es posible, lo que somos capaces o libre de hacer: She can drive a car. Ella puede manejar un carro John can speak Spanish. John puede hablar español Can you hear me? ¿Puedes escucharme?

5 Normally, we use can for the present
Normally, we use can for the present. But it is possible to use can when we make present decisions about future ability. Normalmente, el uso de can es para el presente. Sin embargo, es posible utilizar can cuando tomamos decisiones en el presente sobre la habilidad futura. Can you help me with my homework? (present) ¿Puedes ayudarme con mi tarea? (presente)

6 Can: Requests and Orders
We often use can in a question to ask somebody to do something. This is not a real question - we do not really want to know if the person is able to do something, we want them to do it! The use of can in this way is informal (mainly between friends and family): a menudo usamos can en preguntas para pedir a alguien que haga algo- está no es una pregunta como tal- no queremos saber si la presona es capaz de hacer algo, queremos que lo hagan! El uso de can en este modo es informal (sobretodo entre amigos y familiares) Can you make a cup of coffee, please. Podrias hacer una taza de café porfavor Can you put the TV on. Podrias encender la television Can you come here a minute. Podrias venir un minuto Can you be quiet! Podrias guardar silencion

7 You can't smoke here, but you can smoke in the garden.
Can: Permission We sometimes use can to ask or give permission for something: Can I smoke in this room? Puedo fumar en esta habitación? You can't smoke here, but you can smoke in the garden. No puede fumar aqui, pero puede fumar en el jardin (Note that we also use could, may, might for permission. The use of can for permission is informal.) (Tenga en cuenta que también se usa could, might, may para pedir permiso. El uso can para autorización es informal.)

10 For negative sentences use can + not  (can`t) para oraciones negativas usamos can + not (can´t)
I can´t play rugby. What about you? Yo no puedo jugar rugby. ¿y tu? You can`t playing volleyball....It`s very difficult!   No puedes jugar voleibol… Es muy dificil !

11 Can she lift 50 kilos? Yes, she can No, she can`t
