¿Qué es vuestra vida? … Es neblina What is your life? … It’s a vapor
I. Exhortación a los que no toman en cuenta a Dios. I. Exhortation to those who do not take account of God.

A. Sant. 4:13, “Oíd ahora, los que decís: Hoy o mañana (saben el tiempo) iremos a tal o cual ciudad (saben qué ciudad) y pasare-mos allá un año (saben cuánto tiempo)… A. James 4:13, “Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow (know the time) we will go to such and such a city (know which city), spend a year there (know how long)…

haremos negocio (saben qué negocio) y tendremos ganancia (y saben que habrá ganancia)”. ¡Ya lo saben todo sin consultar a Dios! buy and sell (they know which business), and make a profit (know there will be profit)"; Already know all this without consulting God!

1. Esta actitud es pura arrogancia. Hacen toda clase de planes para el futuro sin tomar en cuenta a Dios. Dios está excluido de su vida. 1. This attitude is pure arrogance. Make all kinds of plans for the future without consid-ering God. God is excluded from their life.

2. Es como el v. 4 (“la amistad del mundo es enemistad hacia Dios”); no dan preferencia a Dios sino al mundo… ¡Es adulterio! 2. It’s like v. 4 (“friendship of the world is enmity with God”); they give preference to the world and not to God. It’s adultery!

B. Así son la mayoría de la gente. Haremos esto, haremos aquello, como si hubiera garantía de cumplir lo que piensan hacer. B. This is the way of the majority of people. We will do this, we’ll do that, as if they had a guarantee they could do what they plan to do.

1. Esto representa un error fatal porque significa que el hombre piensa que su futuro está en sus propias manos. 1. This represents a fatal error because it means that man thinks that his future is in his own hands.

2. Pero leamos Luc. 12:16-21, ejemplo de uno que cometió este error. 2. But let’s read Luke 12:16-21, an example of one that made this error.

C. Pero Santiago dice que no saben cómo será la vida mañana, si estarán vivos.. Que habrá otro mañana.. Que podrán continuar en su negocio.. Que habrá ganancia. C. But James says they don’t know how it will be tomorrow, if they’ll be alive.. That there’ll be another tomorrow… That they can continue in their business… Get gain.

1. No significa temer el futuro. Lo incierto del futuro no es motivo para ser inactivos. Vivir confiado sabiendo que el futuro está en manos de Dios. 1. Does not mean fear the future. The un-certainty of the future is no reason for being inactive. Live confident knowing that the future is in God’s hands.

2. Hacer planes y tratar de realizarlos, pero siempre entendiendo la naturaleza breve y frágil de nuestra existencia terrenal y poner los planes y propósitos en manos de Dios. 2. Make plans and try to carry them out, but always understanding the brief and fragile nature of our earthly existence and place plans and purposes in God’s hands.

D. Sant. 4:15, “Más bien, deberíais decir: "Si el Señor quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello." Hech. 18:21, “Volveré a vosotros otra vez, si Dios quiere”. D. James 4:15, “Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.“ Acts 18:21, "I will return to you again if God wills.”

1 Cor. 4:19, “iré a vosotros pronto, si el Señor quiere”. 16:7, “espero quedarme algún tiempo con vosotros, si el Señor lo permite”. (Pero decirlo sinceramente). 1 Cor. 4:19, “I will go to you soon, if the Lord wills”. 16:7, “I hope to stay a while with you, if the Lord permit.” (But say it sincerely).

E. Sant. 4:16, “os jactáis en vuestra soberbia. Toda jactancia de esta clase es mala”. Prov. 27:1 “No te jactes del día de mañana, porque no sabes qué traerá el día”. E. James 4:16, “you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.” Prov. 27:1, “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Pero ¿quién no lo hace? ¿Cuál de nosotros no hace planes para el futuro y confía plenamente que las cosas serán como planeadas? But who doesn’t do this? Which of us does not make plans for the future confident that things will turn out as planned?

OTROS mueren en accidentes, nosotros no, pero los que mueren en accidentes decían lo mismo. OTHERS die in accidents, not us, but those who die in accidents said the same thing.

Para el que tiene 60 años de edad, “viejo” es tener 70; para el que tiene 70 “viejo” es tener 80, y para el que tiene 80, “viejo” es tener 90 o 100. For the one who is 60 “old” means being 70; for the one who has 70, “old” is to be 80, and for the one who is 80, “old” is to be 90 or 100.

Soberbia, se usaba de hombres que eran “curanderos ambulantes” que hablaban mucho; ofrecían curaciones que no curaban. Arrogance, used of men who were “healing peddlers” that talked a lot; they offered remedies that did not heal.

F. Sant. 4:17, luego una advertencia solemne: persistir en el hábito de confiar en sí mismo, viviendo como si el futuro estuviera en sus propias manos es pecado. F. James 4:17, then a solemn warning: to persist in the habit of trusting in self, living as if the future were in one’s own hands is sin.

II. ¿Por qué dice que la vida es solamente un “vapor”? A. El primer hombre, Adan, vivió 930 años (Matusalén, 969). II. Why say that life is only a “vapor”? A. The first man, Adam, lived 930 years (Mathusa-lem, 969).

Pero Salmo 90:10 dice, “Los días de nuestra vida son setenta años; y en los más robustos, ochenta años... But Psalm 90:10 says, “The days of our years are seventy years; and if due to strength, eighty years…

Con todo, su fortaleza es molestia y trabajo porque pronto pasan, y volamos… 12 Enséñanos a contar nuestros días…” Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we fly away… 12 So teach us to number our days…”

B. Job 7:6, “Mis días son más veloces que la lanzadera del tejedor”; 8:9, “nuestros días sobre la tierra son como una sombra”. B. Job 7:6, “"My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle”; 8:9, “our days on earth are a shadow.”

Job 9:25, 26 “Mis días son más veloces que un corredor… Se deslizan como barcos de juncos, como águila que se arroja sobre su presa”. Job 9:25, 26, “My days are swifter than a runner… They pass by like swift ships, Like an eagle swooping on its prey.”

C. 2 Sam. 14:14, “A la verdad, todos hemos de morir; somos como el agua derramada en la tierra, que no se puede recoger”. C. 2 Sam. 14:14, “For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground which cannot be gathered up again.”

D. Salmo 39:5, “tú has hecho mis días muy breves, y mi existencia es como nada delante de ti; ciertamente todo hombre, aun en la plenitud de su vigor, es sólo un soplo”. D. Psalm 39:5, “You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath.”

E. Pensamos que 70, 80, 90 años es mucho tiempo. ¿Cómo pues dice la Biblia que la vida es como neblina, un vapor, una sombra, un soplo? E. We think that 70, 80, 90 years is much time. Why then does the Bible say that life is like a vapor, a shadow, a breath?

Porque si comparamos 70, 80, 90, 100 o aun 1000 años con la eternidad, no es nada. Es como una gota en el océano. Because if we compare 70, 80, 90, 100 or even 1000 years with eternity, it is nothing. It’s like a drop in an ocean.

Dios no nos hizo para vivir solamente unos cuantos años aquí en la tierra. Más bien, El ha formado en cada persona un espíritu que no muere. God did not make us to just live a few years here on earth. Rather, He has formed in each person a spirit that does not die.

Por eso, esta vida no es el fin; más bien, es el mero principio de una existencia que no tiene fin. Esto es un pensamiento alentador y a la vez alarmante. Therefore, this life is not the end; rather, it is the mere beginning of an existence that has no end. This is an encouraging thought and at the same time alarming.

III. El tiempo que Dios nos da, sea mucho o poco, es muy precioso. A. Efes. 5:16, “aprovechando bien el tiempo, porque los días son malos”. III. The time God gives us, whether much or little, is very precious. A. Eph. 5:16, “redeeming the time, for the days are evil.”

B. Hay varias maneras de medir el tiempo (reloj, calendario, etc.), pero es precioso el tiempo no importa como lo midamos. B. There are various ways of measuring time (clock, calendar, etc.), but time is precious no matter how we measure it.

Son como centinelas que nos advierten de la brevedad del tiempo, y de cuán rápido está pasando; es la mano que nos está empujando hacia la eternidad. They are sentinels that warn us of the brevity of time, and of how rapidly it is passing; it is the hand that is pushing toward eternity.

C. Por eso, aprovecharlo al máximo y nunca malgastarlo. Por ejemplo, hacer excusas es perder o malgastar tiempo. C. Therefore, make the most of time and never waste it. For example, making excuses is losing or wasting time.

Recordar fallas del pasado es perder tiempo. Fil. 3:13, 14, “una cosa hago: olvidando lo que queda atrás y extendiéndome a lo que está delante, prosigo hacia la meta…” Remember mistakes of the past is a waste of time. Phil. 3:13, 14, “one thing I do: forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal…”

Vivir ansiosos es perder tiempo. Fil. 4:6, “Por nada estéis afanosos;… presentad vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias”. Live anxiously is a waste of time. Phil. 4:6, “In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…”

Se pierde mucho tiempo esperando. Siempre llevar Biblia o sermones o comentarios para leer para no perder tiempo en la sala de espera. Much time is wasted waiting. Always carry a Bible or sermons or commentaries to read in waiting rooms to avoid wasting time.

Posponer es malgastar tiempo. Juan 4:35, “¿Todavía faltan cuatro meses para que llegue la siega? ¡mirad los campos, que ya están blancos para la siega!” Postpone is a waste of time. Jn. 4:35, “There are still four months before the harvest? Look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!”

No agonizar (“no hay tiempo”; “no tengo tiempo”; “¿qué pasó con el tiempo?”) sino organizar para no perder tiempo. Not agonize (“there is no time”; “I don’t have time”; what happened to the time?) but rather organize to avoid wasting time.

D. Hoy mismo es cuando debemos buscar a Dios con todo el corazón. Oseas 10:12, “es tiempo de buscar al Señor”. D. Right now today is when we should seek God with all our heart. Hosea 10:12, “it is time to seek the Lord.”

Isa. 55:6, “Buscad al Señor mientras puede ser hallado, llamadle en tanto que está cerca”. Isa. 55:6, “Seek the Lord while He can be found, call upon Him while He is near.”

2 Cor. 6:2, “¡He aquí ahora el tiempo más favorable! ¡He aquí ahora el día de salvación!” 2 Cor. 6:2, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

Rom. 13:11, “Y haced esto conociendo el tiempo, que ya es hora de despertaros del sueño; porque ahora la salvación está más cercana de nosotros que cuando creímos”. Rom. 13:11, “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.”

IV. En realidad tenemos muy poco tiempo aquí sobre la tierra. A. Jn. 7:33, “Entonces Jesús dijo: Por un poco más de tiempo estoy con vosotros”. IV. In reality we have very little time here on earth. A. Jn. 7:33, “Then Jesus said: For a little while longer I am with you.”

Todos podemos decir lo mismo, “un poco más de tiempo estoy con vosotros” y después el espíritu vuelve a Dios quien lo dio. We can all say the same thing, “a little more time I will be with you” and then the spirit returns to God who gave it.

B. “El domingo que viene pienso predicar sobre Sant. 5:7, pero ¿estoy seguro que yo voy a predicar el domingo? Sólo Dios sabe eso. El hombre propone, pero Dios dispone. B. “Next Sunday I plan to preach on James 5:7, but am I sure that I am going to preach next Sunday? Only God knows. Man proposes, but God disposes.

C. 2 Reyes 20:1, “Ezequías cayó enfermo de muerte. Entonces el profeta Isaías … fue a él y le dijo: --Así ha dicho el Señor: Pon en orden tu casa, porque vas a morir…” C. 2 Kings 20:1, “Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet went to him and said to him, Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you shall die.”

¿Ha obedecido al evangelio? Mat. 7:21, “No todo el que me dice: "Señor, Señor", entrará en el reino de los cielos, sino el que hace la voluntad de mi Padre que está en los cielos” Have you obeyed the gospel? Matt. 7:21, “Not everyone that says unto me, Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that does the will of my Father in heaven.”

Ecles. 9:10, “Todo lo que tu mano halle para hacer, hazlo según tus fuerzas”. Ecles. 9:10, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”

Jn. 9:4, “debemos hacer las obras del que me envió mientras es de día; la noche viene cuando nadie puede trabajar”. Jn. 9:4, “we must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; the night comes when no man can work.”

Jn. 12:35, “por un poco de tiempo, la luz estará entre vosotros. Caminad mientras tenéis la luz, para que no os sorprendan las tinieblas…” Jn. 12:35, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you.”
