3 1.The preposition A means to or at A contracts with el to form one word--- al A does not contract with la, las, or los. É l va al cuarto. V amos al gimnasio. V oy a la tienda. E llos van a la sala.

4 2.Also use the preposition a whenever the direct object (the person/thing receiving the action) is a person. P ut a before the person. T his a is not translated. I t is called the a personal. M iro la televisión. M iro al amigo de Teresa. E scucho la música. E scucho a la profesora. B usco un bolígrafo. B usco a mis amigas.

5 1.Use the personal “a” with “alguien”, “nadie”, “alguno”, “ninguno” if they refer to people (even if not specific) who are the recipient of an action. No escuchamos a nadie.

6 2. Use the personal “a” before “quién” and “quiénes” if the answer would require the personal “a.” ¿A quién llamas? Llamo a Lucía.

7 3. NEVER use the personal “a” after “tener” or “hay”. Tenemos parientes en San Francisco.

8 4. Some people use the personal “a” to personify their pet or place. Escucho a mi perro. Amo a Ecuador.
