5 WHAT ARE ARTICLES? A part of speech, exp: a, an, the “a,an” ---indefinite articles “the”---definite article

6 COOKIE EXAMPLE: Give me the chocolate chip cookie. Give me a cookie, please. Imagine a plate full of cookies. There are peanut butter cookies, sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, and one chocolate chip cookie. The first sentence speaks of a particular (or definite/SPECIFIC) cookie: Give me the chocolate chip cookie. The second sentence speaks of any of a number of cookies (or an indefinite/NOT SPECIFIC) cookie: Give me a cookie, please. The difference between the definite and indefinite articles is the difference between talking about a specific cookie, or any old cookie at all. the cookie a cookie

10 TAKE AWAY MESSAGE: Before you figure out what article is needed in a sentence please make sure you have looked at the gender and number of the noun. TWO Questions to ask yourself: #1 Is my noun MALE OR FEMALE? #2Is my noun SINGULAR OR PLURAL? Once you have answered both questions the answer will become obvious.
