1 El presente de los verbos regulares

2 A comprobar: los verbos regulares -ar
Hay tres tipos de verbos: -ar, -er, e –ir. Hay que conjugar los verbos para concordar (agree) con los sujetos. Primero, es necesario encontrar la raíz (the stem) (removing the infinitive ending to get the stem.) Ex: hablar – ar = habl Segundo, es necesario añadir los finales –ar This is the stem!

3 A comprobar: los verbos regulares -ar
Los finales -ar Subject Pronoun Ending Conjugated Verb Meaning Yo -o hablo I speak. -as hablas You speak. Él / ella / usted -a habla He/she speaks. You (f.) speak. Nosotros -amos hablamos We speak. Vosotros -áis habláis You (all) speak. Ellos / ellas / ustedes -an hablan They speak.

4 A comprobar: los verbos regulares -ar
Práctica: Give the forms for each subject/verb combination. Félix / trabajar Los niños / cantar Tú / caminar Yo / ayudar a mi madre Javier y Carlos / mirar la televisión Mis amigos y yo / tomar café Answers: 1. trabaja, 2. cantan, 3. caminas, 4. ayudo, 5. miran,6. tomamos Suggestions for use: Project this image on a white board or chalk board and have student volunteers come up to write the correct verb form next to each item.

5 A comprobar: los verbos regulares -ar
Cuando hay dos verbos en la frase, conjugamos el primer verbo y el segundo se mantiene en la forma del infinitivo. (When using two verbs together, the first is conjugated and the second stays in the infinitive, unless they do not depend on each other) Ex: Juan necesita estudiar. Juan needs to study. conjugated infinitive (Juan is needing; he is not studying) Ex: Yo canto y bailo bien. I sing and dance well. conjugated , conjugated (I do both activities, therefore both are conjugated.) Suggestions for use: Point out that verbs such as necesitar and desear will often be followed by infinitives. Ask students to identify something that they need or want to do, and listen to their responses.

6 A comprobar: los verbos regulares -ar
Para hacer una frase negativa, ponemos no antes del verbo conjugado. Ej:  Pablo habla inglés, pero no habla francés. (Pablo speaks English, but he doesn’t speak French.) Suggestions for use: Have students write or say what they do not do. Then, have volunteers make a presupposition about a classmate, saying that the person doesn’t do something. The person being talked about should affirm or deny the presupposition. ¿Qué actividades NO haces tú?

7 A comprobar: los verbos regulares -ar
Suggestions for use: Have students study the lists of –er and –ir verbs. Tell them that the character in the drawings, Antonio, does the same thing every day. Review time and present vocabulary by either saying a time and having students identify the correct verb to say what Antonio is doing, or vice versa. For example, say “Abre la puerta a su oficina”, to which a student would respond “A las ocho.”

8 A comprobar: los verbos regulares –er e -ir
Los finales regulares –er e -ir Subject Pronoun Ending Conjugated Verb Meaning Yo -o como I eat. -es comes You eat. Él / ella / usted -e come He/she eats. You (f.) eat. Nosotros -emos comemos We eat. Vosotros -éis coméis You (all) eat. Ellos / ellas / ustedes -en comen They eat. Suggestions for use: Point out to students that the process of conjugating a regular –er verb is the same as that of an –ar verb. Encourage students to highlight the endings in their notebooks. Point out that the –er verbs follow a pattern and that these endings apply to all of the verbs. Remind students that all other rules that they learned with –ar verbs apply to –er & -ir verbs (use of no, use of two verbs together, etc.)

9 A comprobar: los verbos regulares –er e -ir
Add the following endings to the stem to conjugate an –ir verb. Here is an example with the verb vivir. Subject Pronoun Ending Conjugated Verb Meaning Yo -o vivo I live. -es vives You live. Él / ella / usted -e vive He/she lives. You (f.) live. Nosotros -imos vivimos We live. Vosotros -ís vivís You (all) live. Ellos / ellas / ustedes -en viven They live. Suggestions for use: Point out to students that the process of conjugating a regular –ir verb is the same as that of an –ar or -er verb. Encourage students to highlight the endings in their notebooks. Point out that the –ir verbs follow a pattern and that these endings apply to all of the verbs found on page 85. Be sure to have students take note of the similarities in endings between –er and –ir verbs, with the exceptions of the nosotros and vosotros forms.
