3 ‘to be’ In Spanish, we have two ‘to be’ verbs: – SER – ESTAR We will be focusing on ESTAR today.

4 Estar (to be) Estar has an irregular ‘yo’ form. There are 5 different uses for ESTAR. What are they? estar (to be) estoyestamos estásestáis estáestán

5 Uses of ESTAR P – position L – location A – action C – condition E – emotion

6 P – position Position stands for where an object is placed. -¿Dónde está el lápiz? -El lápiz está encima del escritorio y a la derecha de la manzana.

7 L – location Location refers to where a building, city, state, etc. is. -¿Dónde está la escuela? -Está en Cedar Park.

8 A – action Action refers to the present progressive. – The present progressive is what someone is currently doing. -¿Qué están haciendo? -Están escuchando música.

9 C – condition Condition refers to how something is. Is it new? Old? Broken? Fixed? Clean? Dirty? -¿Cómo está tu habitación? -Está sucia.

10 E – emotion Emotion refers to one’s feelings. Are you happy? Sad? Nervous? Excited? -¿Cómo están hoy? -Estamos muy alegre.

11 Prepositions with Estar When using estar, you will naturally use prepositions to tell the position or location of someone or something. Our prepositions are: Prepositions IzquierdaAbajo DerechaArriba DelanteEnfrente DetrasEncima CercaEntre LejosAdentro Afuera

15 Present Progressive In Spanish, the present Progressive is formed by using a conjugated form of estar followed by the present participle. The present participles in Spanish are: estar + -ando/-iendo Present Participles -ar-er-ir -ando-iendo
