3 ¿QUÉ TIEMPO HACE HOY?  Hace buen tiempo.  Hace sol.  Hace mal tiempo.  Está lloviendo.  Llueve.

5 LOS NÚMEROS  In Spanish, the numbers 1-15 are unique.  To express 16-19, Spanish uses a pattern that creates a compound word with “ten”+“and”+ [the number] 16  diez y seis  dieciséis 17  diez y siete  diecisiete 18  diez y ocho  dieciocho 19  diez y nueve  diecinueve  Note the spelling changes when “diez y [number]” become one word. The “z” becomes a “c” and an “i” is inserted between “diez” and the number.  Note that dieciséis has an accent mark. This is to preserve the sound “seis” makes when it becomes part of a compound word.

6 LOS NÚMEROS  21-29 are expressed by creating a compound word with the words “twenty” + [the number] 21  veinte uno  veintiuno 22  veinte dos  veintidós 23  veinte tres  veintitrés 26  veinte seis  veintiséis  Note the spelling change when “veinte” and [the number] become one word. The last “e” in “veinte” becomes an “i”.  Note that 22, 23, and 26 have accent marks. This is to preserve the sound that “dos” “tres” and “seis” make when they become a compound word

7 LOS NÚMEROS  31-99 are expressed by two separate words joined by “y” 31  treinta y uno 42  cuarenta y dos 53  cincuenta y tres  Numbers DO NOT change to agree in number or gender  Except the numbers that end in 1 do. So this means this rule applies to 1, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91. It becomes “un” or “una” before nouns Tengo (I have) ochenta y un gatos. Treinta y una mochilas Un bolígrafo.

23 LOS NÚMEROS  To ask how many of something there is, use: ¿Cuántos _______ hay?  To answer how many of something there is, use: Hay _______. For example: ¿Cuántos gatos hay? Hay dieciséis gatos. “La profesora tiene dieciséis gatos.”

24 LA HORA  To ask what time it is, use ¿Qué hora es?  To reply, use: Es la ____ for stuff that starts at one (am or pm) Es la una. Son las ______ for stuff that starts at any other time Son la nueve.

26 ¿QUÉ HORA ES?  Es la…  Son las… Son las siete (en punto)

30 LA HORA  To ask what time something is happening, use: ¿A que hora es [event]? ¿A que hora es clase?  To reply, use A la ____ for stuff that starts at one and A las ______ for stuff that starts at any other time A la uno de la tarde. A las nueve de la mañana.

31 LA HORA – INFORMACIÓN EXTRA  Other useful words… Midnight  medianoche Noon  mediodía Temprano  early Tarde  late La hora  the time, the hour El minuto  the minute El segundo  the second  In Spain, they typically tell time using “military time”  In Spain, people are typically punctual… except for informal gatherings like parties. In those situations, guests are expected to arrive about a half hour after the stated time.
