2 Talking about things in the past: If you want to say “I went to the store.” instead of “I go to the store.”, you need to use a different verb ending!! We’ve already learned that the verb endings for –ar verbs in the present tense are: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -an Now we are going to learn new endings for the past tense (also known as the preterite tense)

3 Hablar = to speak Hablé (I spoke) Hablaste(You (informal) spoke) Habló(He, she, you (formal) spoke) Hablamos(We spoke) Hablaron(They, you (plural) spoke)

4 Add these verbs to your verb book: Comprar = to buy Tomar = to take, eat Nadar = to swim Esquiar = to ski Bailar = to dance Pasar = to pass, spend Llamar = to call Alquilar = to rent Echar = to throw, mail Golpear = to hit Brillar = to shine Estudiar = to study Trabajar = to work Escuchar = to listen Usar = to use

5 Verbs that end in –car, -zar, -gar These types of verbs have spelling changes in the yo form. The spelling change takes place for pronunciation reasons. Make sure you spell the verbs on the following page correctly in your verb book!!
