3 Flamenco Dancing in Spain –What is flamenco? –Flamenco combines guitar playing, singing, chanting, dancing, stomping, and handclapping. Te flamenco dancer strives for grace and dignity while performing spontaneously and expressing her emotions.

4 History of Flamenco –The earliest influences were from Hindu dances, the songs of Greek mourners, and the mimes of Rome. –Andalusian dance thrived during the days of the Roman Empire, during which Jews entered Spain and their chanting made its way into the music. –The invasion of the Moors in 711 brought Arab influence to Andalusia’s culture. –A special lute used eventually evolved into the Spanish guitar. –The Gypsies arrived during the 15th century and settled in Andalusia. –Flamenco flourished throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

5 How did flamenco get its name? –The origin of the name “flamenco” is uncertain. Some believe it came from the Flemish courtiers in the 1500’s during the rule of Spain’s Charles V. Others say it was the nationality given by the common people to the Gypsies. Yet others say it comes from the Arabic “fella mangu,” which mean laborer who sings.
