HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH Proyecto Hispanic Heritage Months begins on September 15 through October 15. September 15 th is also the independence for 5 Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept 16 and Chile on Sept 18 th. The U.S. Census Bureau defines the term Hispanic as, Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any race. The term Latino is short for Latin American. More than 35 million people identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino on the 2000 Census and 48.4 million on the 2010 Census. Hispanics constitutes 16% of the nation’s population. Virginia has at least a half-million Hispanic residents. We will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by making posters about the following Hispanics & Latinos.
