2 WHAT IS A PREPOSITION? Use prepositions to tell where things are located… Where?

3 A la derecha (de) → To the right (of) A la izquierda (de) → To the left (of) Al lado (de) → Beside / Next to Cerca (de) → Near (to) / Close to Delante (de) → In front (of) Detrás (de) → Behind Enfrente (de) → Facing *Entre → Between Lejos (de) → Far (from) * Entre is the only preposition that will NOT use ‘de’ after

6 Examples: The bank is to the side of the pharmacy. El banco está al lado de la farmacia. The butcher and the café are close to the bread bakery. La carnicería y el café están cerca de la panadería. The post office is between the shoe store and the book store. El correo está entre la zapatería y la librería.

7 BE CAREFUL! What if the 2nd location is masculine? The church is to the right of the hotel. La iglesia está a la derecha del hotel. The airport and plaza are far from the post office. El aeropuerto y la plaza están lejos del correo. De + el = Del

8 Self Check 1. The bookstore is to the right of the pastry shop. 2. The bus station is facing the post office. 3. The shoe store and the hotel are behind the jewlery store. 4. The bread bakery and the pharmacy are to the left of the park.

9 NOTE: -Quedar can be used to indicate location. -It works just like “estar” with prepositions. - Quedar = to be located Ex: El banco queda cerca del hotel (The bank is located close to the hotel) Ex: El correo y la farmacia quedan a la derecha de la plaza. (The post office and the pharmacy are located to the right of the plaza)
