2 Gender of Nouns: SingularPlural MasculineEllos FeminineLalas 1.Masculine nouns (m.) refer to male persons or nouns ending in –o, -l, - r, -s, -n, -z, -ma ex: el hombre, el escritorio, el profesor, el programa, el papel, el mes, el examen, el lápiz exception: el día, el mapa, el idioma 2.Feminine nouns (f.) refer to feminine persons or nouns ending in –a, - dad, -ión, -tad, -ie ex: la mujer, la hermana, la ciudad, la televisión, la especie, la libertad exception: (nouns ending in o & e are fem.): la mano y la radio, la clase, la noche

3 3.Nouns refering to people and end in –or, -és, -n or –a add –a to form the feminine: ex: el profesor – la profesora, el alemán – la alemana 4.Some professions are either m. or f. depending on their meaning: ex: el (la) artista, el (la) estudiante, el (la) policía, el (la) joven Pluralizing Nouns: 1.Nouns ending in a vowel add –s ex: el libro – los libros, la carta – las cartas 2. 5 Special Uses of Articles: A.Used in Spanish but omitted in English: 1.Before names of languages, except after hablar, en or de ex: El italiano es fácil. - pero - Hablo italiano con mi abuela. ex: Estudiamos el españ ol. Necesito responder en español. 2. Before titles, except when addressing someone: ex: La Sra. Lewis es mi profesora. –pero - ¿Es mi profesora de español, Sra. Lewis? 3.Used with body parts: ex: Tengo el pelo moreno y los ojos azules. 4.After verbs like Gustar: ex: Me gustan los deportes. Me gusta el arte. 5. Articles are not used before nouns of occupation, nationality, religion or group ex: Soy estudiante. Soy irlandés. Quiero ser profesor.
