Commands are used to tell someone to do something. Examples: Speak Spanish! Wash the dog! Clean the house! Turn up that loud music!

3 1 2 How to form formal commands in Spanish
It is very easy to form commands for usted and ustedes in Spanish. 1 Begin with the yo form in the present tense and drop the o. 2 If it is an –ar verb, add –e for usted and –en for ustedes. If it is an –er or –ir verb, add –a for usted and –an for ustedes.

4 Ejemplos: Gastar gasto (present tense yo form)
gaste (usted command form) gasten (ustedes command form) ¡Gasten dinero! = Spend money!

salga (usted command form) salgan (ustedes command form) ¡Salga con sus amigos! = Go out with your friends!

Regular –car, –gar and –zar verbs have a spelling change in the “usted” and “ustedes” commands. Ejemplos: Infinitive Yo form Usted command Ustedes command jugar juego juegue jueguen tocar toco toque toquen almorzar almuerzo almuerce almuercen sacar saco saque saquen pagar pago pague paguen

9 volver → ¡Vuelva! ¡Vuelvan! dormir → ¡Duerma! ¡Duerman!
Más ejemplos: leer → ¡Lea! ¡Lean! volver → ¡Vuelva! ¡Vuelvan! dormir → ¡Duerma! ¡Duerman! cerrar → ¡Cierre! ¡Cierren! entender → ¡Entienda! ¡Entiendan! pedir → ¡Pida! ¡Pidan!

10 4 important verbs that do not follow
the rules for formal commands are dar, ir, ser and saber. You need to memorize these! ¡Dé! – ¡Den! = Give! ¡Vaya! – ¡Vayan! = Go! ¡Sea! – ¡Sean! = Be! ¡Sepa! – ¡Sepan! = Know!
