4 COLLECTING PERMITS IN MEXICO Application to renew or apply for a collector’s permit: FOR PLANTS: Comisión Nacional Forestal (CONAFOR) (part of SEMARNAT). Provides 1-year permits to collect plants. There may be some restrictions depending on the species. Requirements (for Mexicans): · Completed application format, suported by a national instituion (e.g., the Instituto de Biología, UNAM) · Copy of ID · Summary of research project (including objectives and methods) · Chronogram For non-Mexicans · If applying on their own (without a link to a Mexican institution), the number of requirements increses. · Payment of fee (ca. $1,000.00 USD) · The Institute of Biology can provide a letter of support (umbrella), but 50% of the collected plants should be deposited in the national collections.

5 COLLECTING PERMITS IN MEXICO Application to renew or apply for a collector’s permit: FOR ANIMALS: Dirección General de Vida Silvestre (part of SEMARNAT). Three formats are required: 1. Application for licence for scientific collecting 2. Application for renewal (if relevant) 3. Activity report (if relevant, for renewal). Include information about obtained products, inl. scientific publications · Part of project in the SNI (National System of Researchers) · Copy of ID · Summary of research project (including objectives and methods) · Chronogram · Fees are waived from members of Mexican research institutions For non-Mexicans · Payment of fee (ca. $1000.00 USD) · The fee can be waived if in collaboration with a Mexican institution

6 COLLECTING PERMITS IN MEXICO · Some species that are under preservation norms (Norma Oficial Mexicana) require special permits. · Collecting in preserved areas will require special permits.

Monto de derechos o aprovecahmientos aplicables - $13522.13 + IVA - No se aplica si se anexa tabla (???). - Por el trámite y, en su caso, autorización de colecta científica, temporal o definitiva, de material biológico de flora y fauna silvestre, terrestre y acuáticas realizada en el país por extranjeros. Las personas que realicen colecta científica en el país, bajo algún convenio con el Gobierno Federal o con alguna institución mexicana, así como investigadores mexicanos registrados en el sistema nacional de investigadores, no pagarán los derechos a que se refiere esta Fracción.
