Portugal fue el primer país europeo en esclavizar a los africanos.Portugal was the first European country to enslave Africans.

Los europeos intentaron explotar la mano de obra de las poblaciones nativas. Europeans tried to exploit labor from the native populations. La gran cantidad de muertes en estas poblaciones por enfermedades (viruela) llevó a una escasez de mano de obra en el Nuevo Mundo. The large death toll on these populations from disease (smallpox) led to a labor shortage in the New World.

Muchos africanos habían estado expuestos a enfermedades europeas y habían acumulado cierta inmunidad. Many Africans had been exposed to European diseases and had built up some immunity. Muchos africanos tenían experiencia en la agricultura y se les podía enseñar el trabajo de plantación.Many Africans had experience in farming and could be taught plantation work. Era menos probable que los africanos escaparan porque no sabían cómo moverse por la nueva tierra.Africans were less likely to escape because they did not know their way around the new land. Su color de piel facilitaba su captura si escapaban y trataban de vivir entre otros.Their skin color made it easier to catch them if they escaped and tried to live among others.
