We’ve learned to use tener to express possession Tengo muchos amigos. I have a lot of friends. There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿Tienes hambre? Are you hungry? No, pero tengo frío. No, but I’m cold. Tenemos prisa. We’re in a hurry.
