4 The Imperfect: The imperfect in Spanish covers several different types of formations in the English with just one verb. This can make translations a bit difficult. You’ll find that the translations depend very much on context and sometimes there isn’t just one correct translation.

5 Write down several different ways you could translate the following verb phrases:

6 Yo dormía… I slept… I used to sleep… I would sleep… *NOT conditional
I was sleeping…

7 Ellos cantaban… They sang… They would sing… They were singing…

8 Nosotros comíamos… We ate… We would eat… We were eating…

9 Translations: Because of these variations it is important when translating from Spanish to English to pay attention to context and pick the best option given that context.

10 Translations: Also, when translating from English to Spanish it is important to focus on what the sentence is communicating, rather than trying to complicate things more than necessary through word for word translations.
