4 Titles and Courtesy When talking to a person directly with a title and last name, you use a title to show courtesy and respect: señor, señora, señorita, profesor, profesora, doctor, doctora, etc. When you are talking about someone, the titles are preceded by a definite article: el, la, los, las. Mucho gusto, Señorita Ferguson. BUT La Señorita Ferguson es mi profesora.

When you talk about something happening on a certain day, use the article el instead of saying “on”. I have art class on Tuesday. Yo tengo la clase de arte el martes.

To ask what day it is: ¿Qué día es? What day is it? ¿Qué día es hoy? What day is it today? To tell what day it is: Es el (name of the day). It is ___________. Es el miércoles. It is Wednesday. Hoy es (el) miércoles. Today is Wednesday.

To ask what the date is: ¿Cuál es la fecha? What (which) is the date? ¿Cuál es la fecha hoy? What (which) is the date today? To tell what the date is in English, we say the month, then the number of the day. In Spanish, tell the number of the day first, then the month. It is June 5th. Es el cinco de junio. Today is August 13th. Hoy es el trece de agosto.

17 Asking and Telling Dates
Exception! The only exception is the first of the month. For this you use “primero” instead of “uno”. It is December 1st. Es el primero de diciembre.

In English, we sometimes use a shortcut to tell the date: March 20, / 20 / 10 But, remember, in Spanish, the day precedes the month: March 20, / 3 / 10 This can sometimes be confusing: What date is this? / 5 / 10 Is it June 5, OR May 6, 2010?
