Art Criticism Step 1: Description: Look at the artwork. Describe what you see like a good reporter or detective. Use objective, factual words. What can you learn from the title of the artwork? What subjects in the artwork can you recognize? Looking at the elements of art, describe what qualities you see? Line, Shape, Color, Value, Form, Texture, Space What media and techniques did the artist use?

Crítica de Arte Paso 1: Descripción: mire las ilustraciones. Describe lo que ves como un buen reportero o detective. Usar palabras objetivas y factuales. ¿Qué se puede aprender del título de la obra de arte? ¿qué asignaturas de la ilustración puedes reconocer? Mirando los elementos del arte, ¿describir qué cualidades ves? Línea, forma, color, valor, forma, textura, espacio ¿qué medios y técnicas usó el artista?

12 Art Criticism Step 2: ANALYSIS – How is the work organized? Analysis means you look for relationships. To find relationships among visual elements, look to the principles of design. EMPHASIS: Is there a dominant element or focal point that you see first? Why? BALANCE: Is there a special balance, or “weight,” among the elements? What mood does it create? PROPORTION: Do the proportions look normal, Ideal or unusual? Why? PATTERN: Are elements repeated to create a pattern? Where? Why? RHYTHM or MOVEMENT: What visual rhythms or paths of movement do your eyes follow? Where? Why? UNITY & VARIETY: What elements bring together, or unify, many parts of the design? Why? What elements add variety? Why?

Para encontrar relaciones entre los elementos visuales, mirar a los principios del diseño. Énfasis: ¿hay un elemento dominante o un punto focal que usted ve primero? ¿Porqué? Balance: ¿hay un equilibrio especial, o "peso" entre los elementos? ¿Qué humor crea? Proporción: ¿las proporciones parecen normales, ideales o inusuales? ¿Porqué? Patrón: ¿se repiten los elementos para crear un patrón? ¿Donde? ¿Porqué? Ritmo o movimiento: ¿Qué ritmos visuales o caminos de movimiento siguen tus ojos? ¿Donde? ¿Porqué? Unidad y variedad: ¿qué elementos reúnen, o unifican, muchas partes del diseño? ¿Porqué? ¿Qué elementos añaden variedad? ¿Porqué?

14 Art Criticism Step 3: INTERPRET (I feel…) – What is the artist saying? Use the information you have gathered to tell what the work means to you. Use analogies and language with adjectives and adverbs. Example: “The lively, angular shapes seem to be dancing.” State main themes, or hypothesis, that could explain what the artists wanted you to see and appreciate. Is there symbolism in the artwork? What do you think it means? What feeling do you think the artist wanted to give the viewer when looking at the work? Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced? How does the work relate to other ideas or events in the world and/or in your other classes?

15 Crítica de Arte Paso 3: interprete (me siento...) – ¿Qué está diciendo el artista? Utilice la información que se ha reunido para contar lo que el trabajo significa para usted. Use analogías y lenguaje con adjetivos y adverbios. Ejemplo: "las formas vivas y angulares parecen estar bailando". Los temas principales del estado, o hipótesis, que podría explicar lo que los artistas querían ver y apreciar. ¿hay simbolismo en la ilustración? ¿Qué crees que significa? ¿Qué sentimiento crees que el artista quería dar al espectador cuando miraba el trabajo? ¿te recuerda el trabajo otras cosas que has experimentado? ¿Cómo se relaciona el trabajo con otras ideas o eventos en el mundo y/o en sus otras clases?

16 Art Criticism Step 4: JUDGMENT (I believe…) – Is this a successful work of art? What do you think about this artwork? Do you like it? Why OR Why not? Give valid answers, not just a “yes” or a “no”. Give your opinion on the work's achievement or failure. Consider why you are judging an artwork and the criteria, or standards, you should use. What parts of the work make you feel it is a success or failure? What criteria (think of the style of the work) can you list to help others judge this work? How unique is the work? Why do you feel this work is or isn’t unique? What are some improvements you feel the artist could have made to the work?

17 Crítica de Arte Paso 4: juicio (creo...) – ¿es esta una obra de arte exitosa? ¿Qué opinas sobre esta obra de arte? ¿te gusta? ¿por qué o por qué no? Dar respuestas válidas, no sólo un "sí" o un "no". Dé su opinión sobre el logro o fracaso del trabajo. Considere por qué usted está juzgando una obra de arte y los criterios, o estándares, usted debe utilizar. ¿Qué partes del trabajo te hacen sentir que es un éxito o un fracaso? ¿Qué criterios (piense en el estilo de la obra) puede enumerar para ayudar a otros a juzgar este trabajo? ¿Qué tan singular es el trabajo? ¿por qué sientes que este trabajo es o no es único? ¿Cuáles son algunas de las mejoras que usted siente que el artista podría haber hecho a la obra?
