Gramática 1: The preterite of stem-changing –IR verbs
Español 2: Capítulo 4 Gramática 1: The preterite of stem-changing –IR verbs
2
Repaso We already know how to conjugate! Start with the infinitive
Drop the –AR, -ER, or –IR Add the appropriate ending according to the type of verb, tense, and subject. In this case we are using the preterite (past) tense. Hablar Comer Vivir Habl- Com- Viv- Hablé Hablamos Hablaste Hablasteis Habló Hablaron Viví Vivimos Viviste Vivisteis Vivió Vivieron Comí Comimos Comiste Comisteis Comió Comieron
3
However… There are some irregular verbs that don’t follow these steps. They pretty much get to do whatever they want. These rebel verbs in the preterite are: Dar Ver Ser Ir
4
Ver “to see” – the verb without the accents
Vi Vimos Viste Visteis Vio Vieron Ser / Ir “to be / to go” – the fun ones! Fui Fuimos Fuiste Fuisteis Fue Fueron
5
Irregular Preterite Stem
There are also some verbs that are slightly less rebellious and just have irregular stems. The ones we have learned so far are: Infinitive Irregular Preterite Stem Andar Anduv- Tener Tuv- Estar Estuv- Venir Vin- Poner Pus- Decir Dij-
6
Verbs with irregular preterite stems also have their own set of irregular endings (with NO ACCENTS!)
-imos -iste -isteis -o -ieron

And now for the new stuff!

The preterite of stem-changing –IR verbs
Although the majority of present tense stem-changing verbs do NOT stem-change in the preterite, there is one exception: Only –IR verbs that have a stem- change in the present tense have a stem change in preterite. These verbs only have stem- changes for their third person forms (él / ella / usted / ellos / ellas / ustedes)

Preferir, seguir, divertirse, pedir, servir, vestirse
Most stem-changing preterite verbs have the stem-change e -> i or o -> u Sentirse: e -> i Me sentí Nos sentimos Te sentiste Os sentisteis Se sintió Se sintieron Dormirse: o -> u Me dormí Nos dormimos Te dormiste Os dormisteis Se durmió Se durmieron Other verbs that follow this pattern are: Preferir, seguir, divertirse, pedir, servir, vestirse Morirse
10
Also, the verb reírse (“to laugh”) uses accent marks in the preterite when the í is pronounced as a separate syllable. Me reí Nos reímos Te reíste Os reísteis Se rio Se rieron

Practiquemos Use words from each box to make sentences in the preterite tense. Yo Tú La gente Mis amigos y yo Los jugadores Los animadores Vestirse Divertirse Sentirse Reírse Ganar Ponerse Contento Triste Mucho A gritar y bailar De uniforme (en) el partido
