Rules for el PRETÉRITO – actions that are seen as completed * For actions that happened a specific number of times (including once) * For actions that interrupt. * For actions that occurred for a specific amount of time. * For action-oriented events. Yo hablé is usually translated “I spoke” but can be “I did speak.” Words normally associated with the preterite: ayer – yesterday el año pasado – last year anoche – last night hace dos días – two days ago una vez – once (one time)

Yo fui al baño diez veces ayer. Nosotros fuimos al baile, bailamos, hablamos, comimos y regresamos a casa.
