6 ¿Qué?, ¿Cuál?, ¿Cuáles? As you know, these mean: what? or which? or which ones? However, these are not interchangeable in Spanish.

7 What’s the difference? ¿Qué? ¿Cuál(es)?
This is used when you’re looking for a definition or explanation. ¿Qué es esta cosa? What is this thing? ¿Qué estudias? What do you study? What are you studying? This is used when your answer has more than one possibility to choose from. ¿Cuál prefieres, el francés o el español? Which do you prefer, French or Spanish? ¿Cuáles son tus plumas? Which ones are your pens?

So basically, if you can use “Which?” in the question in English without changing the meaning it will likely be ¿Cuál(es)?

9 ONE exception: ¿Cual(es)? cannot be used DIRECTLY before a noun.
OK: ¿Cuáles son los libros de la maestra? NOT OK: ¿Cuáles libros son de la maestra? If this happens you must use ¿qué? though it will have in this instance the same meaning as ¿cuál? would. ¿Qué libros son de la maestra? What (which) books are the teacher’s? ¿Qué clase te gusta? What (which) class do you like?

¿Qué es tu número de teléfono? ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? ¿Qué es la capital de Argentina? ¿Cuál es la capital de Argentina, Buenos Aires o Lima?
